Who owns the rights to the former stats of the Hornets?

I remember when the Hornets came to New Orleans, Larry Johnson or Alonzo were mentioned when comparing stats of franchise history to the like of Chris Paul and current Hornets at the time. The Bobcats had no history.
Now that we changed our name to pelicans, the other day I heard a stat saying our only franchise history playoff win was against the Mavericks with Chris Paul.
Do the Charlotte bobcats/now hornets inherit the old hornets franchise history stats now because of name change?

Yes
And it doesn't matter to me. It's not like they were in nola during that time.

It’s kind of like if the Saints moved to San Antonio as the San Antonio Saints
They would claim the 2009 super bowl as part of their franchise history along with all of Brees records.
Then New Orleans would get a team and change the name to the New Orleans dogs
After a few seasons the Sant Antonio Saints change name to the San Antonio hogs.
New Orleans dogs changes their name to New Orleans Saints.
Which team says they have Brees’ records and the 2009 SB title?

We claim everything from 02-13

The Bobcats/Hornets technically adopted all of the stats and records from the current Pels franchise’s time in Charlotte. It’s basically confusing as frick.
Personally I don’t think Benson should have given them the name back so quickly. He should have waited longer for the Pels identity to gel. It still takes me a millisecond every time I see the word “Hornets” on a sports crawl.

Before Charlotte got another team,
We claimed the old Hornets history from Charlotte?

Tom Benson was gracious to allow the Charlotte Hornets to reclaim "Charlotte Hornets" history when both teams changed their names
so the way it goes is...
New Orleans Pelicans came into existence when the then-Hornets played its first game in New Orleans
Charlotte Hornets came into existence in the mid-80s, "ceased operations" when the then-Hornets moved to NOLA... and then "resumed operations" when the then-Bobcats came into existence

the key here is the ownership change
when Shinn held the keys... he kept the history from Charlotte
when Benson took it over... he wanted to make the team distinctly Louisiana... thus the name change
he also realized what "Hornets" means to the people of Charlotte... so he gave the team name & history back
ETA: plus the fact that "Bobcats" was just the 1st owner of that team naming the team after himself

Don’t think so. Stats/ records attach to the franchise, not necessarily the name.

This is all correct, but Benson also entered the negotiation late. He offered the name back to Charlotte in return for a quick approval from the NBA owners.

Yep. We had the franchise.

Nah, what he should have done is negotiated a 3 way trade with the Jazz and the Charlotte franchise and if the jazz refused to play ball, threaten to name the team the Mormon sister wives, or the Magic underwear.
Let the Mormon church be forever associated with New Orleans or give us our name back. Moot point now because I have embraced the pelican name.

Benson bought the rights to the name Pelicans, in the early 90s. Benson was going to purchase & name a AA baseball team the Pelicans, but major league baseball expanded to Colorado and the Zephrys' which were AAA took precedence. But Benson still had the rights to the name New Orleans Pelicans.

We're the New Orleans Pelicans
That's who we are. Shoulda, woulda, coulda...
The Utah Jazz may have the best fan base in the NBA. They love their team and name. They've earned it. No fan of the NBA would want that name back. Even in 2002 when the franchise started in New Orleans, the Jazz were a team from Utah. Seriously, without Pistol Pete, no one would have cared to know who the hell the New Orleans Jazz were.
We are the Blue, Red, and Gold Pelicans!

If we claim everything since 02 why isn't the division banner hanging?

I just want the old jazz stats. Stats should stay with the city
