He is among 6 names being mentioned for the job that they requested to speak with, by Shams...

quote:

The Kings have requested permission to interview the following candidates, sources have told The Athletic: Timberwolves executive vice president Sachin Gupta, Heat assistant general manager Adam Simon, Nuggets GM Calvin Booth, Pelicans GM Trajan Langdon, Rockets assistant GM Monte McNair and former Hawks GM Wes Wilcox

Update:

quote:

Sources tell @TheAthletic that Pelicans GM Trajan Langdon has informed the Sacramento Kings he will not be involved in their search for a new head of basketball operations.

Langdon, one of the hottest names on the market, is heading into his second season with New Orleans.

I think we all knew the clock was ticking on him getting a full control job at some point. I didn't think it would be year 1.

I mean I knew it was going to happen eventually, he's going to be in pretty much every other POBO conversation out there going forward unless the Pels crash and burn.

Honestly can't see any of the respectable candidates taking that job though, the Kings organization is career poison.

Guys like Booth and Langdon can DEFINITELY do better, but its hard to get a full control job. It would be pretty rare for a guy to pass up that opportunity, no matter the franchise or owner. These guys all think they will be the one to turn it around.

This list sounds like the Kings don't want to spend much. Difficult for Trajan to pass up on full autonomy, but that franchise is bad and he should get another opportunity.

Going to be a tough choice for him if offered. If he bombs with the Kings regardless if Vivek is half to blame, he's not going to get another shot for a while and his pristine resume is permanently tainted.

Sucks that Kings pick before us as he probably knows all of our interests in the draft.

I was trying to think of a way to word this well without it sounding shitty but frick it.

Does anyone think that Sachin Gupta (who is VERY qualified and a totally brilliant guy, MIT etc) would have some very slight upper hand given the owner is Indian? He may want to make an extremely qualified fellow Indian the first Indian POBO in the Nba.

Fun fact about Gupta: he literally invented ESPN’s Trade Machine.

No doubt I think this comes into play. I do wonder how much of a voice Dumars has in this process and what his basketball operations role is going forward.

There may not be the pure autonomy that it appears is available in Sacramento.

Maybe, but how much control are you ever getting under Vivek?

I tend to see where the wiser front office/coaches tend to not jump at these types of promotions. Ones where the organization is highly suspect and they are going to have all the blame and not all of the control to justify it.

You see guys like Kerr that didn't take the Knicks, or Griffin didn't jump at the first open FO spot for those sorts of reasons.

It's a personal adage I have, but I would honestly rethink my opinion of his judgment if he took that job.

That is something a candidate would need to be extremely wary of.

Is Dumars setting himself up to be the de facto owner as a "consultant", wherein you are NOT the ultimate basketball authority?

The Kings stay messing with the Pelicans. They’re annoying.

One name we aren't talking about is Simon. Could be a real hot name given the Heat's recent success, and a couple of NBA Blue Checks are talking him up.

Too soon for Langdon. His decisions need to first bear fruit and one year as a GM under a very controlling Griffin is too difficult to evaluate. But it's great affirmation of his character and career trajectory.

I mean if this is a motivating factor that might inadvertently be good for all parties.

In that, notoriously thermostatic and at times micromanaging Vivek would actually be incentivized by such a motivation to want that person to succeed. Maybe giving them more leeway and opportunity to trip up and carve their own path that his controlling nature would likely not be willing to give someone else.
