I still like Herb for Lively. While I absolutely love Herb, he’s got two years of control and we would have Lively on his rookie deal still. Couldn’t be just that, but that’s a base I would do and I would take Fears at 7 if I had any chance to.

However, I would argue he is exactly the type of player that you want to hang on to if you are trying to reset the culture.
And this is the exact problem. Are we resetting the culture or contending? We have to pick one.
If we are resetting the culture then yes you ideally keep Herb and trade Zion.
If we are trying to contend then Herb is realistically the only tradable asset that can land us another star and keep Trey/ Zion.
Trade Herb- contend
Keep Herb/ trade Zion- rebuild
Keep Herb/ keep Zion- mediocre team that could go to shite if injuries continue.

I have to believe this is part of something more. At least I hope so.

Herb will be a key piece on a championship team if he ever gets moved. A player that improves every aspect of his team, like a Siakam.

It has to. Again we got younger not necessarily better. It doesn't fill holes or push us to contender status. This trade only makes sense if there's a bigger trade going down.

Food for thought, Dumars has always valued and gambled on highly skilled undervalued lead guards who are considered damaged goods.
Throughout his tenure in Detroit, he traded for damaged goods like Billups, Iverson, and Jennings. This is right up his alley.
Poole is 26 and is about to hit his prime. If the fit is good, you have a pretty good asset or a viable option at the position going forward.
If not, he's an expirer, and they can go into the offseason and leverage his contract in a trade. They moved CJ(who peaked here) and who doesn't seem to have a lot of value around the league and Olynyk who was probably always meant to be attached to a trade.
Getting Bey to upgrade the bench, a little more cap space for this year, and #40 to leverage it in another trade is the overlooked aspect of the trade.
At the end of the day, it's a relatively low risk trade and the Pelicans got some flexibility in return to set up more moves.

Exactly. But I'm scared shitless that this won't be the case.

We will honestly know tomorrow.... If we draft Maluach then we are probably running it back. If we don't draft Maluach then we probably have a center trade lined up.
I will say that if we do trade Zion for a good package and could add one of Jerami Grant/ Julius Randle/ Cam Johnson.... We would arguably be way better off depending on the other package.

Olynyk...I would have tried to hold onto him.
Why? He's aging and we're going nowhere

For anyone that just wants to DV every time Herb's name is mentioned: Get the frick over it, there's a chance he gets trade whether you want to accept it or not. Stop crying or denying the possibility.
Unless it’s a trade that’s majorly in our favor, aka a Danny Ainge type deal, I have no interests in trading Herb with DD no longer on the roster.
They chose the wrong one to trade last offseason.

I am fully prepared to be disappointed by Jordan Poole, Saddiq Bey and the No. 40 pick next season already.

I don't know about Poole. He is a knucklehead.
I wonder if this was the only deal for cj

Interesting. I don’t think this makes us much better or worse in terms of talent but it certainly makes us younger. CJ and Olynyk will both be 34 when the season starts, Poole and Bey will be 26. I also want to think Poole is a better fit. I’m leaning toward liking this move.

We aren’t trading Zion. Dumars literally came out and said he is the face of the franchise. They literally talk almost every week.
Anyways, we need to fill the arena with baddies from Tulane or something if we want to see Poole maximize his efforts. Going to miss CJ, he always gave it his all here.

Right. This is a huge part of the trade. Kinda crazy

Yeah and If I'm trading Zion I'm also going to say he's "the face of the franchise" and not "he's been underwhelming and one bad injury away from a bust".
As much as I want to agree with you I still think its in play. For the right price of course.
The return value in a trade will be higher for literally the face of the franchise > a guy who has underperformed and is seen as on the way out.
