Some Pelicans news - I'm hearing the Pelicans are bringing in Michael Hartman, former Director of Coaching Analytics with the Cavs, to lead their analytics department.

Sounds like we really want to take our Analytics Department to another level. I don’t think it’s very robust right now.

Obvious Griffin connection there.

Langdon might be the only guy in the organization Griff has hired who he didnt have a relationship with previously.

Obviously have to keep that in mind with the new head coach.

I guess that’s good, but analytics seem kind of pointless if the coach doesn’t respect them.

Examples include Uncle Al letting Boogie shoot threes when his defender was dramatically smaller. Letting Lonzo take step backs. Letting virtually anyone on the team bring the ball up from behind half court, not even on a fast break, and take an off the dribble 3 with zero passes.

Sounds good

I don't recall where I saw it or how to find it, but I once saw a list of the # of guys on the analytics team for every NBA team and we were either last or at the bottom in terms of just the of analytics guys we have on the team, so hopefully this shows a bit more focus on this.

I'm going to take a crazy wild guess here and speculate that Griff is going to end up hiring a coach who respects analytics.

There was some mention last offseason that they were going to work on the analytics department.

I think that when Griffin mentions buy in, he's including analytics.

Guess who are two guys that are into analytics: Kenny Atkinson and Will Weaver.

Both have been available the whole time. Seems Lue is clearly Griff's #1 choice.

100% agree, but if Lue takes a job elsewhere and we are "forced into" our second option of Atkinson...he is into analytics, big time...as is Will Weaver (as a possible lead assistant?).

I find GMs are often saved from themselves when they hire their 2nd or 3rd choice.

Atkinson with Weaver as lead assistant could be a nice hire.

Lue has vowed to take Chauncey Billups on the ride with him wherever he’s hired as Assistant HC... Does anyone have a read on his philosophy and what he may bring to the table? A little off topic I guess.

Really the only one of those scenarios that has an aspect of analytics except boogie on smaller guys and Lonzo Stepback’s. Plus you are using purely in game data to evaluate... these guys track every shot and movement in practice.. plus you can respect analytics and also not do exactly what they suggest.. maybe he was trying to develop a step back because of analytics.

Chauncey has been trying to get into coaching for a few years now. He’s been offered some interviews and I believe a position but didn’t think they were the right fit so he waited. I think he’s come in and helped do some 1 on 1 coaching with players also. I would love to have Mr. big shot on any coaching staff

There's been smoke about Lue and pretty much nobody else for the Pels. Joe Vardon who writes from the Athletic and is based in Cleveland said that the Pels would have replaced Gentry with Lue during the season if Lue had been available. That's probably the biggest single piece pointing to Lue as Griff's favorite. Not the most authoritative source, and the only leaks being about Lue could point to his agent, but it's all we have to go on.

I also felt it was significant that the day after the Nuggets got knocked out of the Bubble was the first time we heard that the Pels were "starting" their search, suggesting one of the Nuggets assistants might be on the short list.
