a best case scenario is a mid-to-late June return to play -- with no fans

Even that might be hard to do.

If you do the math - w/players, trainers, coaches, referees, stats crew, broadcast, floor moppers, etc - may not be able to get that under 50 for a game without fans. Technically, can have those on the bench take over mop duty(!), but still...

Reporting with @malika_andrews: NBA teams operating G League franchises expect rest of the minor-league season will soon be cancelled, sources tell ESPN. Regular season runs thru end of March, playoffs into April. Players have been informed they'll be paid thru end of schedule.

UPDATE from Woj

quote:

Fears exist of a season completely lost, especially based on the slow response of the United States to flatten the curve of the coronavirus and make testing available on a widespread basis. The CDC issued a recommendation on Sunday night that no events or gatherings should include more than 50 people for the next eight weeks.

...For now, there's a working plan that games would return without fans, and teams have been told to search out arena dates well into August for the playoffs, sources said. Teams have been directed to give the league office potential dates at smaller nearby game venues, including team practice facilities, that could spare the use of empty, cavernous arenas and possibly provide backdrops to unique television viewing lines.

pushing resumption until June pushes playoffs into august. They aren’t going to then open camps in October

they can bite the bullet this season and get a full season in in 2020/21. No way they truncate next season to get this one in
Not saying this is a perfect scenario by any stretch, but it's been hinted and rumored at the NBA being better off with a Christmas day league start and the league then finishing up in July/August. Not due to the virus, but just in general.

This gives them the perfect opportunity for this to happen if it can play out with a June ish resumption of the league. Finish up around August, that automatically pushes back next season. Then if that goes off well, they just keep that going forward.

Again, not ideal or remotely what the league wants with this virus ,but it's definitely possible that it organically moves back Opening Day by a couple of months and that stays for good, and for the best IMO.

Interesting when you lay it out:

Mid-June- start of the NBA playoffs

Early August- NBA Finals

End of August- Draft

Sept. 1- Start of FA

Sept. 10- Summer/fall league

Dec. 10- training camp opens

Dec. 25- regular season opens (82 games)

Mid-June- NBA season ends

Obviously I'd much rather things go back to normal, but this would be kinda interesting.

Imagine how weird it would be watching the NBA Finals on TV taking place in an empty practice gym...that's wild.

Would be cool to hear what everyone is saying on the court, but I'd bet most of it would just get cut out by the broadcast lol

One thing about Bobby's timeline is there's no resumption of the regular season. I wonder if they'd experiment with the play in tournament to make up for that.

First Rd (1 game)
Suns at Blazers
Spurs at Kings
Grizzlies and Pelicans get bye (Pels win tiebreaker over Por, Sac)

Round 2 (1 game)
Suns/Blazers winner at Memphis
Spurs/Kings winner at Pelicans

Rest day
8th seed playoff game (1 game)
Winners of Rd 2 games at the home arena of the higher seed

You could get this done in 4 days before the playoffs start

pel centric.

memphis has 3 games on 3 teams.

spurs and suns are out. not in at all.

only the 3 tied for 9, 10 and 11
kings v blazers.
winner v pels
memphis double bye into your finals and its a fair deal.
