The NBA has told its teams that the league will be suspended for 30 days, minimum.

That’s an aspirational timeline, to be clear. It’s a minimum, and it’s almost certainly not in their control.

This is from a Raptors beat writer.

Rachel Nichols was on First Take earlier saying this could be the impetus the NBA has been waiting for to shake up the schedule. The Hawks CEO recently said he wanted the season to start in December and go through August so the NBA has less overlap with other sports.

It will be interesting to see where things go from here.

UPDATE from Woj

quote:

Fears exist of a season completely lost, especially based on the slow response of the United States to flatten the curve of the coronavirus and make testing available on a widespread basis. The CDC issued a recommendation on Sunday night that no events or gatherings should include more than 50 people for the next eight weeks.

...For now, there's a working plan that games would return without fans, and teams have been told to search out arena dates well into August for the playoffs, sources said. Teams have been directed to give the league office potential dates at smaller nearby game venues, including team practice facilities, that could spare the use of empty, cavernous arenas and possibly provide backdrops to unique television viewing lines.

Going to be interesting to see the impact on the cap next season. Looks like it will be significant if they end up canceling or even with a truncated schedule.

its suspended.

by definition all games could still happen.

i think playoffs happening at all would be the best possible.

if olympics are postponed a year playoffs more likely.

Apparently the CBA has language already to artificially inflate the cap for extenuating circumnstaces like these. At the end of the day a lowered cap from projections won’t affect the stars, but could have a drastic negative affect on basically every non max level player. That’s what the language will be about correcting.

They’re already talking about shortening the remaining schedule so you’re not wrong yet but it’s not looking likely we finish the whole season

Yeah, I think it's more likely they just go with the current standings and start the playoffs in a timely manner rather than push the suspended regular season into the playoff months.

The East's top 8 is pretty much settled. Only the West's 8 seed is up for grabs. What they should do is organize a 6 team mini-tournament between the teams 8-13.
First Rd (1 game)
Suns at Blazers
Spurs at Kings
Grizzlies and Pelicans get bye (Pels win tiebreaker over Por, Sac)

Round 2 (1 game)
Suns/Blazers winner at Memphis
Spurs/Kings winner at Pelicans

Rest day
8th seed playoff game (1 game)
Winners of Rd 2 games at the home arena of the higher seed

You could get this done in 4 days before the playoffs start

I doubt there will be any fans this season. That alone should cancel the NBA.

So true. It would be fantastic. And BI and Zo, and Zion and the entire team will be rested. Coach Vinson will have the entire team shooting 38% from behind the arc when the season resumes (excluding the obvious: Favors, Hayes, etcetera) Go Pels.

If Pelicans don’t or can’t make playoffs, I’m all for canceling the Playoffs. Won’t watch anyway.

CDC recommendation of no events of 50-plus people for next two months comes as a number of NBA owners and executives increasingly believe a best case scenario is a mid-to-late June return to play -- with no fans. League's scouting for possible arena dates all the way thru August.

yeah they aren’t coming back.
pushing resumption until June pushes playoffs into august. They aren’t going to then open camps in October

they can bite the bullet this season and get a full season in in 2020/21. No way they truncate next season to get this one in
