re: Scott Kushner: fans deserve better and should demand itPosted by TigerinATL on 1/2/18 at 9:32 am to quail man

This team isn’t selling a budding youth movement. Or a process. Or a brand of basketball.
It’s selling the now.
It’s pitching two All-NBA players, in their primes, paired together in an attempt to save one another from being the league’s best players devoid of meaningful games.
Yet, even with that specter lingering over the locker room, this team doesn’t generate a consistent effort or a reliable product.
On any given night, any version of the Pelicans could show up. The one who blew out the Spurs, Cavaliers and Thunder or the one who loses to Orlando, Sacramento, Dallas and New York at home (combined 55-92 record).
...Spend three hours in the arena and if someone were to tell you this the first season (or game) in franchise history, you’d have scant evidence beyond your smartphone and a lobby display to disprove them. It’s all about that night and perhaps the next one.
It is this franchise’s DNA.
Get to the next day, the next week, the next season. An ounce of competitiveness over a pound of patience.
It’s why they’ve traded every first-round pick since 2012 and endlessly try to fill gaps with longshot second rounders or known-quantity veterans.

The major problem with fan engagement compared to other franchises is the complete disregard of the draft. As fans, we do not have an established playoff team to root for like Memphis has been in recent past, but at the same time we also have no cheap draft picks to provide hope for the future and get the satisfaction of watching them grow like other teams.
We have had the pleasure of watching AD develop, but no other home grown young talent to cheer. Most people don't buy lottery tickets because they think they will win. People buy them for the entertainment value of thinking about if they did win. 1st round picks likely do not develop into stars, but there is enterainment value in the "what if" and seeing if it happens.
Adding Boogie provided the "what if" entertainment value, but that is starting to wear thin for many as we toil away at .500. I just pray that we retain our 1st this year and start better utilizing the draft.

Unless they are able to use Diallo/Jackson to dump Asik, I don't see how they do keep it. They need to cut more than Ajinca's salary to tread water with the roster next year and still avoid the tax.

The plan since last offseason was to stretch Asik in the summer of 2018. Unless they found a good trade. They wouldn't pay a first just to offload him.
I also wonder if some team with forsight just takes that contract this summer. Gets them to the floor and then can be a great asset in summer of 19

Well that only comes into play if Boogie plans on re-uping which at this point is unknown. It makes no sense to make a win now move and using picks to try to dump Asik when we do not know our cap situation.
I also think the current salary cap projections for next season are conservative. I think BRI is going to come in high with some more competitive playoff series and there will be a bigger salary shortfall than currently projected. I expect a $104M cap and maybe a $127M tax line with potential for higher.
Stretching Asik is also an option if Boogie wants to re-sign. It is not ideal to carry dead weight on the cap, but it allows us to perhaps develop cheap talent to offset that in the future.

That would make a big difference, I've been working with $123 for the tax. And I agree that the playoffs should be more competitive which will directly impact the cap next year.

Without reading the article, I will say Demps and Gentry suck at their jobs and should have been fired long ago.
If there was an owner who was “all there”, they would have been.

I went to the Knick game last weekend. I've never seen a more miserable set of people playing basketball. Looked like the whole team would have rather been anywhere else that night.
