and he still went 9th in a weak draft.
This is relevant, how?

You're going to sit here and argue that his upside is higher than Davis?
It is near Davis's. Why is this outlandish?

People are freaking out because Drummond was actually adequate, and I'm just not buying this ridiculous ceiling that people keep referring to.
Why are Davis's projections more realistic than Drummond's?

NBA scouts/gms/coaches disagree on his upside. If people thought he had any chance of being a "TOP 3" player, you think he makes it there? It's realistic to assume that if any team saw top 3 upside potential out of him, they would have moved into the top 8 to take him.

C'mon dude. Are you serious with this?

Who cares? This issue was at the draft, over a full year ago. He was one of the youngest players entering the league. He wasn't 'avoided' due to issues with his ceiling, teams shied away because he was very, VERY raw. Even Jim Calhoun said that any team that drafts him needs to wait 5 YEARS for him to develop.

I'm still trying to decipher your argument. Are you saying that because no teams took him in the top 8, that his upside isn't as good as Davis's? Is that what you are trying to say?
Do a 2012 redraft. Just give me the top 3 picks. If Drummond is in your top 3, your argument falls flat on your face.

Drummond averaged something like 14/14 per 40 minutes as a 19 year old C. His upside is ridiculous. Very very few people have put up those type of numbers. In summer league, he was up to 290 with no noticeable gap in athleticism.
Davis is amazing. But isn't it clear that someone with the body of a Drummond could have more upside?
Why is everyone so pissed other than homerism. They could both be the Duncan and Shaq of the next decade. I hope for our basketball dollar they turn out to be and we re arguing about this in 10 years.

Great post. I agree 100%.
ShamelessPel doesn't seem to think they should be mentioned in the same breath. I disagree.

I think Drummond has answered his biggest question of lack of motor/maturity, but what offensive skill has he shown? It sounds like he's on the defensive center track. Davis has displayed quite a bit of skill on both sides of the ball.

Because at 19, he already showed ELITE defensive skills. With enough discipline he could be the best defensive in the league as early as late this year.
If he gets a creative passing PG (ahem) Jennings, his mobility will allow him to be a devastating pick and roll player.
Guys this is splitting hairs. Will he achieve all of that potential? Who knows?
But it's all there for Drummond. Just like it's all there for Davis.
Also, for those arguing draft as proof. 1st, it's not. 2nd, go back a year earlier and Drummond were 1a and 1b for the first pick. We re talking potential here.
Sky is the limit for both of them.

I'll be the first to admit that Drummond has absolutely no offensive game. Can't shoot. Doesn't even have any refined post moves. He is so unbelievably raw, I'm not sure if/when he will ever develop these.
...But that doesn't mean that he can't be a terror on the offensive end with lobs, rebounding, put backs, etc. He is fully capable of that.
Dwight Howard has absolutely no offensive game either (even though he has improved). He once averaged 22.9 PPG in a season. Mutombo once averaged 16.6 PPG. Even Ben Wallace averaged near 10 PPG one season, and he had the worst offensive skills I have ever seen.

LMAO. Shabazz Muhammad was the consensus 1 using your argument. I don't see you arguing the case that he has the ceiling of a top 5 player. The draft absolutely does matter. Just because he can jump high and has a nice build doesn't make him legitimate "all-time great" debatable. There's a reason that he fell to 9. He is RAW. Arguing that someone with a skillset that fundamentally flawed is going to be a top 3 player is silly.
Ya'll are the ones coming in here defending the Drummond at 3 in 2017 pick. Own it, even though we'll hardly remember this thread or your names.

That was drummond's number 1 highlight of his rookie career. Dont act like he does that every night. I would be more impressed if he stayed in front of wade for 20 seconds then blocked his shot

In 20 min PG, he averaged 1 steal.

Too be fair Kobe told teams like the Nets that they shouldn't draft him (had the 8th pick). I do see the potential with Drummond, the question is will he be more like Dwight or more like DeAndre Jordan JaVale McGee. Projecting him as a top 3 player in 2017 is pretty presumptive.

SB nation's article today says, yes, drummond at 3 is an insane pick
0-11 from 10-23 feet for the season
His rebounding proficiency will dip in his sophomore season like kenneth faried's did.
Still you are entitled to your opinion that drummond is the next shaq, however outlandish it may be

What that chart tells me is he's a 100% 3 point shooter. Maybe he'll be the number 1 player in 2017.

So in 342 FG attempts, he took 11 from 10-23 feet and missed them all, and I should be bothered by this??

Chances are good the proficiency will drop. So what?
