Fresh off winning the lottery, the New Orleans Pelicans got greedy and committed a robbery. By trading Anthony Davis to the Los Angeles Lakers for Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, the No. 4 pick in the 2019 draft, and two additional future first-round picks, the Pelicans have bucked conventional wisdom that the team that gets the best player wins the deal.

Trade heists aren’t supposed to be simple, but the Lakers were desperate. New Pelicans executive VP David Griffin knew the Lakers couldn’t afford to burn another season of LeBron James—and perhaps the bridge between the Lakers and Rich Paul, the agent for both Davis and James—by waiting for Davis to hit free agency in the summer of 2020. The Lakers had to make this trade, and despite the heavy price, got one of the best young players in the league to pair with James.

Fantastic article from a national source. Highly recommend.

Great article. I’m excited to see what vets we pick up with this young team. I’ve been pounding the table for Niko to be one of them.

So weird to have stable/great leadership, slew of quality young players, and a great amount of quality first round picks for the next 5-7 years.

Really want Niko back too. I have to think Gentry is putting that bug in Griffins ear

Niko actually liked it here too.

I could be off base but it seems like the euros don’t mind small markets nearly as much.

I agree. Niko was one that I hated to have to give up.

An All-Defense first team member next season, Holiday now gets to play alongside a big guard in Ball who can more than handle his own and a roaming backline force in Zion who can switch out onto ball handlers and gobble them up. With this much ball pressure, length, and mobility, New Orleans can be hell on Earth for opposing guards who spent a little too much time at Tipitina’s the night before.

I've heard that Euros particularly like New Orleans because it feels more homey to them.

I would like Niko back too. I'm guessing there's no rule saying you can't sign a player you just trade the previous season? Seems like a scenario that could potentially raise some eyebrows.

Do you guys think that now with all these great defensive players we're going to have, that Gentry shifts to a more defensive focused style of play? We can run crazy up and down the court offense but I think our defense can be absolutely stifling.

There’s a lot in this sentence to unpack. But let’s start with what NBA guards are going to Tipitina’s?

Certainly true but Dems didn't have this kind of access to a head start either.

Speaking of Euros, new GM Langdon is supposedly adept in Euro scouting.

Curious to see if he brings in a Euro vet or if takes a chance on a reatively unknown Euro in the second round (or one of the multiple 1st rd picks, should the #4 is traded.)

In almost every draft at every stop he’s been either a Scout or Exec his teams have picked at least 1 Euro/Foreign player.

If think it’s a VERY safe bet one player will be a Euro. I think at least 1 of the 2nds if not both will be draft and stashes.

The biggest prize in this deal is Ingram, who is somehow still 21 years old and would be, at worst, the third pick of this year’s draft.
