Realistic off-season wish list (Draft/FA/Trade)
There is obviously a need to get more lengthy players who are capable on offense but bring defense to the table.

Perfect offseason moves:
1. Sign Free agent SF/PF: Jeramie Grant
2. Sign Free agent C: Harry Giles
3. Draft 3&D: Do whatever deal to move into
TOP 10, if needed (depending on when the
lottery SF run happens) to draft Aaron
Nesmith/ Devin Vassel/ Saadiq Bey
4. Draft 2nd PG: Grant Riller
5. Possibly trade Jrue Holiday/JJ Reddick
6. Sign another serviceable center
7. Obviously pay Ingram (offer close to max now)
8. Re-sign Josh Hart to team friendly contract now
9. Bring Didi over to earn roster spot

2020-2021 New Orleans Pelicans roster:

PG: Lonzo Ball, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Grant Riller
SG: Jrue Holiday, JJ Reddick, Josh Hart, Didi
SF: Brandon Ingram, Aaron Nesmith/Saadiq Bey
PF: Zion Williamson, Jeramie Grant, Nicoli Melli
C: Jaxson Hayes, Harry Giles, servic. Center

If Jaxson can start and play solid defense (without fouling), start the season with same starting 5 minus Favors.

Where this team is considerably better is the bench, which was an Achilles heel for the Pels last season.
Now, it's sured up as a significant strength of team, with length, versatility, defense and shooting if we are able to get Nesmith or more 3&D with Saadiq Bey and allow Josh Hart to play more natural position of backup 2 guard.

Backup PG spot will be a dog fight between NAW and Grant Riller, who I believe will be a stud in the NBA and is one of the better shot creators in this draft.

Jeramie Grant is your versatile big forward, which is sorely needed on this team, who can guard the big SF/PF's in the game and has become an efficient 3pt. shooter. Able to play in a small ball lineup if Zion is the Center. Fits timeline as he is only 25 and best years ahead of him.

Harry Giles, another Duke Alum, who has potential to have a breakout year on the right team and remain healthy. Kings were foolish to renounce his 4th year option of only $4mil. Capable rebounder, excellent passer (self-proclaimed best big man passer after Jokic), solid mid range jumper, still has above-average athleticism at the 5 (even with the past injuries) and can anchor the 2nd team defense as he is a serviceable shot blocker. He's been productive in the minutes he's played, averaging per 36 of: 17 ppg/10 rpg/3 apg on 55% fg and 77% ft this season. He has All-Star capabilities and I believe the boom he will bring on a fair contract, outweighs the risks as he was healthy last year and performed well when Bagley/Holmes were injured. Will be an under-the-radar signing who undoubtedly will help his future team get wins on a relatively, cheap contract. An offer of 4 yrs/24 mil. range with incentives increase, 4th year Team option would be a fantastic deal for both sides. Pels would have a good Center tandem in Jackson for defense and Giles for offense. This duo is better than retaining Favors and has more long term potential to be exactly what Griffin envisions around Zion.

As constructed, this team is a Top 5 Western Conference team and can grow together. Defense becomes markedly better and can play alot of switching onto any player on the court. Gives the Pels options at the deadline to possibly find the right 3rd star on the team.

This team would be comparable to Denver, with many pieces to send at teams in waves. Other than the center position, you have virtually 2 starting 5 lineups and can easily absorb injuries during the season even if a starter is out for a considerable amount of time.

Most importantly, you retain cap space to resign your core moving forward. If Nesmith is drafted and shoots as expected, then JJ becomes expendable at the deadline for more assets and/or better package deal with Jrue for 3rd star.

Players 9-14 really don't matter that much in the NBA. You need solid contributors 1-8 and impact players that do 25+mpg. Getting 3rd string forwards isn't putting this team in contention..

re: Realistic off-season wish list (Draft/FA/Trade)
I'm going back and forth on trades, but realistic list to compete:
1) Hire Lue as HC.
2) Trade JJ to Milwaukee for Bledsoe.
3) Trade Ball to NYK for Payton and #8.
4) Re-sign Ingram.
5) Re-sign Favors to a 2/20.
6) Use the MLE on Jae Crowder.
7) At #8 draft Okoro.
8) At #13 draft Nesmith (Redick replacement).
9) Bring over Didi.

Bledsoe/Payton/NAW
Jrue/Hart/Nesmith
Ingram/Crowder/Okoro/Didi
Zion/Melli/Crowder
Favors/Hayes/FA (I'd bring back Okafor)

Realistic list to "blow it up" and get assets and young players in return while focusing on player development and future competition:

1) Hire Atkinson as HC.
2) Three team trade. Jrue to GSW, Wiggins, Ball and #2 to NYK, #8, 21 Minnesota pick, 21 NYK 1st to Pels.
3) JJ to Philly for Richardson and a 24 1st.
4) Re-sign Ingram.
5) Re-sign Hart 4/48 (missed this in first one, but same applies there).
6) Sign Van Vleet to a 4/84 deal.
7) Use remaining cap space to take on a deal for future draft assets.
8) Bring over Didi.
9) Draft picks stay the same.
10) Use BAE on Ish Smith.
11) Fill out roster with minimum deals.

FVV/NAW/Ish
Hart/Nesmith/Didi
Ingram/Okoro/Kenrich
Zion/Melli
Hayes/Okafor

I was in board until I saw this. Nah, fam. I don’t want any big contracts unless they are homegrown. We don’t need to overpay if we build this right.

Hire Craig, Unseld or Ham, or if we go veteran then Billy D. Not TY Lue.
Trade Lonzo
Trade JJ
Trade Jrue

re: Realistic off-season wish list (Draft/FA/Trade)
I don’t think you need to move into the top 10 for Nesmith, and holy no to Okoro.

My “to do” list this offseason is pretty short:

1. Hire a coach not named Jason Kidd. I don’t have a clear pecking order, but I know Atkinson has dropped a bit for me. Other former head coaches in D’Antoni, McMillan, & Donovan would rank ahead of him. I’m on the fence with Ty Lue. Darvin Ham, Dan Craig, Wes Unseld, Charles Lee are all assistants that I would be happy to promote.

2. Trade Lonzo - I could actually make this #1. I have zero interest in giving him a big deal. That has bad contract written all over it. If we could get something like #8 for him, that would be fantastic. But I would go as low as trading him for like Furkan Korkmaz, a player that’s a ready to break out but is on a team with good depth.

3. Sign BI & Hart to extensions. Get that off my to do list.

That’s really it. I would take calls on Jrue, maybe even make a few myself, but I don’t need to trade him. I would be happy resigning him as well. But if a deal blows me away, sure. Same could be said for JJ, I wouldn’t even mind doing him a solid and getting him somewhere that could potentially win it all a year early.

Oh and it doesn’t quite make the “to do” list, but if we did pull off something like 8 for Lonzo, I would try to move up. The value chart says 8 & 13 can get you up to 2, I would be looking at somewhere between 3-5. Like if Charlotte would do 8 & 13 for 3 and 32 I would do that. Take Killian Hayes or Deni Avdija at 3. Oh and actually that does give me another line.

4. Move up into the late first. With that hypothetical trade above you now own pick #2, 9, 12, and 30 in the 2nd round. I would make calls in the early to mid 20’s. Say you trade 32, 39, & 42 to Utah for #23. I think that puts you in a great spot to draft an NBA ready guy like Desmond Bane, Grant Riller, Tyler Bey, Cassius Winston, Elijah Hughes, etc. Or, you could also go for potential with guys like Josh Green, Jahmi’us Ramsey, Leandro Bolmaro, Jaden McDaniels, etc.

What exactly is so appealing with Lue as a HC candidate?

Hire Mark Jackson as HC.

BI is signed to offer sheet by Detroit and we don’t match.
Extend Lonzo to max contract.
Trade DIdi on draft day for a future 2nd.
At 13 take Pokusevski and keep him in Europe.
Sign Nerlens Noel to full MLE
Resign Favors 5/125

re: Realistic off-season wish list (Draft/FA/Trade)
I’m seeing a lot of offseason plans from people that don’t include Favors. Do people actually think he won’t be on the team next year or are people just still annoyed with his play in the bubble? We have Favors bird rights and his market is projecting to be a little thinner than originally thought. He’s probably not going to get much more than the MLE on the open market, so why wouldn’t we just use his bird rights and keep him? Unless we need to renounce his rights and clear his number to make a big FA offer (which is probably unlikely) or trade for a starting C, I just don’t see Griffin just letting him walk. I think there’s a better chance Favors is on the team next year than Lonzo.

You had me until this one. Idk why we’d risk offending him by trying such a low ball offer. An ownership stake and naming rights to the arena would at least get our foot in the door.

He knows how to handle superstars.

Championship pedigree.

He's young and will be able to grow with the team.

He is a defensive minded coach.

re: Realistic off-season wish list (Draft/FA/Trade)
I was initially on board with bringing Favors back, but after seeing him in the bubble, weight increase/poor shape and the Utah comment after losing to them in the 1st bubble game, Im good with letting him walk.
He is not taking us to the promise land. Too rigid, no outside shooting and not athletic enough for the better centers in the league. More importantly, his personality is too laid back to add veteran, vocal leadership to this team, which is sorely needed.
I would rather let Jaxson get starter level minutes, draft or sign a player who just needs an opportunity to play and can stretch the floor a bit and/or a true defensive minded, athletic big who is a tenacious rebounder.
We will score, but this team needs a better defensive anchor and a stretch 5, to make a significant leap. Obviously someone like Adebayo would be perfect or someone in that mold just a tad taller.

re: Realistic off-season wish list (Draft/FA/Trade)
Only problem with this line of thinking is who would we realistically replace him with if we are looking to compete?

We won't have the cap space for an Ibaka, we could MAYBE get Turner in a trade, but we would need salary to send out to get him.

Realistically if we want to compete next season for a playoff spot, our only real solution at the 5 is Favors. Plus having him at 10-12 mil a year gets us right we would need to use his salary in a trade (for someone like Turner).

re: Realistic off-season wish list (Draft/FA/Trade)
We should trade Lonzo to Detroit after they don't match BI, would ony be fair. Also we can get 2 2nds for Didi now most likely. Idk about Favors getting 125... 4/100 seems a little better.
