Andrew Lopez tweet:

Regarding Zion Williamson, the Pelicans are taking the opportunity to get him completely right physically -- weight, conditioning & bio-mechanics -- before returning him to the court. The meniscus tear was relatively minor. The Pels are taking a long-term, big-picture approach.

As I said in the other thread, it is frustrating but necessary.

I would really love to know what they are doing now that they didn't do in the time between summer league and the start of training camp.

Because whatever they did then didn't get him below the 285 that he weighed at his surgery. It's obvious that this is the reason that Zion's return didn't happen inside the 8 weeks originally projected.

I know they worked on conditioning after Summer League...and it is obvious that they feel they didn't do a good enough job there.

Maybe Nelson is taking a different approach

I think that this also explains the Angie Thomas tweet the other day about Pels fans not needing to worry about Zion -- that the rest of the league needs to worry.

This could also explain why we aren't seeing videos of Zion shooting free throws right now -- they may have a "SuperZion" surprise in store for everyone.

I would not be surprised if we don't see Zion at all. In regards to what they did between Summer League and the Season, there simply was not enough time to get him 100% right physically. Getting him right physically will take time to develop strength in core areas, lose weight, and learn how to functionally move with no compensatory patterns or mechanical faults. I've said all along that I believe he should be on a significant minutes restriction and not be let go fully until next season after an offseason of conditioning and training.

He will play this year, stop it

What this tells me and from what Griff said last night, he could probably play right now, they just want him to lose a little weight before.. likely down to the 270 range

It would destroy the franchise and the team wouldn't sell any season tickets next year. People keep saying this, and it's just dumb.

I know, a whole fkn 3 months. They should have had Zion completely rebuilt and in shape and ready to be an allstar. Boo this regime, build a device that can freeze time!

I call bullshite on all of this. You know how you make someone right for basketball? You let them play fricking basketball. Look at Jaxson Hayes. We thought he would be in the D league and because of having to play, he is probably our 4th best player.

It is like bizarro Griff took over and is trying to suck all of the life out of this franchise after the greatest offseason ever.

Look guys, nothing is set in stone one way or the other in regards to Zion’s return.

However I can tell you Griff wants him on the court this season. Sooner rather than later.

They are working with him to best optimize his playing career. They don’t want another Blake Griffin or Derrick Rose situation. High-flying players that would use so much force that their bodies couldn’t handle it. Guys that would land on one leg consistently. A high risk type of landing.

While you might get lucky and avoid injury for a period of time, if you constantly put yourself in “high-risk situations” for ligament stress, it only takes one slight twist for the ligament to give under all of Zions weight.

Sure his weight is a factor, but Zion needs to work on landing & placing himself in less high risk situations.

First of all, he is playing basketball most likely. In practice and a controlled environment.

It is likely that they feel like his weight and conditioning would simply lead to him getting injured again.

So they are working on things to make him a better player and lessen the risk of future injury. I believe I will go with Aaron Nelson over "Saints5021"

If a 19 year old freak athlete is STILL having issues with his weight, we are fricked when he has lived in New Orleans for a few years.

Fat people can get fat anywhere.

Some players have simply never been exposed to proper nutrition, habits, and the right way to train.

Its up to Zion but he will have all of the tools at his disposal.

We don't know shite about what to do with a 275-300lb atheltic freak that can jump out of the gym, you act like there's a manual or prior data that would indicate the proper course. Everyone in the world is learning at the same time right now.

If they are conditioned for basketball, yes. It's obvious this kid was overweight and growing still at the same time. You don't just throw that kid out on the hardwood after a meniscus injury when he controls the destiny of your team and your team isn't as good as you thought. If the franchise could survive redshirting him; I bet they would. In he grand scheme of transforming a body, they have had roughly 5 months with him total if you delete the surgery recovery time; that's not a hell of alot of time to transform a body, even if he is 19. It's not just weight, I have to assume they are working on his posture and mechanics as well; because we all have seen how whacky they are.

ETA:I have no problem with what has transpired this season; I don't know how you could have realistically expected more (outside of seeing zion play). Even leaving gentry as HC for year 1 is acceptable to me; they had a million things going on that needed attention and I'm fine with not making the move year 1 and leaving it to the next offseason. Pumping up the hype like they did, was the major issue. I don't get that at all, that seems to me like where business conflicted with success.

Now if Griff comes in at the end of this season and announces Gentry is staying; then I will get my pitchfork and torch.

I'm taking Bio-Mechanics as how he takes off and lands.

Several players have changed out they do this in the past, like Derrick Rose.

One of the more rational posts I’ve seen in a while

Great point. Griff hyped up this team & roster and is dramatically underperforming. That is the issue here.

The problem with this franchise in the past is making short-sighted decisions because Dell was worried about his job. While sitting Zion isn’t fun now, it gives us the chance for future success

Remember when they were adamant about keeping Williamson at his current weight right after the injury? I guess that campaign Griffin went on when the national media was harping on Zion’s weight was a lie. They just found a low key opportunity to do it in season.

I can't disagree with this assessment. The way Griff plays the media and fans is the only thing I'm a little suprised at this season. It's a delicate situation though. The broadcast the other night is the only time I can remember Griff saying Zion's weight aloud as a number. Maybe they are realizing they need to alter their approach.
