I already don't really care to watch the NBA outside of the Pels. If we hire Jason Kidd, i think i'd just call it quits for the Pels as well.

I don't like Kidd as a candidate, but I would say that he was a better candidate than when we hired Gentry. That's how bad of a candidate Gentry was in my opinion.

Kidd's teams have won some games and he has developed players. The problem is he made inexplicably dumb decisions, and was a complete a-hole that Front Offices ended up hating.

He would be bottom of my list just above Mark Jackson, but I'm not going to give up on the team. I'll hate the hire, and hope for the best.

One of the biggest problems with Kidd is he's openly said he doesn't do well with young teams that he doesn't feel understand the game on the same level as him. He doesn't have patience to help them learn.

How anyone could hear that and think he should coach this team would be beyond me.

Yeah that quote is particularly troubling and should basically end any candidacy for a job like this.

I definitely don't want us to hire Kidd, but I'd also be very surprised if, given their past history together, Griffin didn't interview him.

Lots of things in the NBA come down to relationships, and Griffin would basically be ending that one if he didn't interview Kidd.

What connection do they have to each other? Working together at NBATV?

I can't think of another one offhand.

edit: I guess they were with the Suns together for a little while, but Griffin was pretty low level I think while Kidd was there.

I think they share agents and Kidd may have been in Phoenix when Griff was there.

They were in Phoenix together, but Griffin was not very high level at that time. I'm sure they had interaction though.

Doesn't seem like a good reason to hire someone

Griff is looking for a leader of men. As much as we hate the idea of Kidd as the next coach, he was a leader his entire career, he has coached a talent similar to Zion in Giannis and set him on an MVP path by pushing him into a Point Forward role. Kidd is not without qualifications for the job, he just comes with way too much baggage to be the best option.

Yeah that's my thing...he DOES have positives.

But his baggage to me just does not make sense when you have so many other qualified candidates.

The more i think about it,, and the more i see the little bit of info we get, the more i don't see them hiring an up and comer.
I think they want someone with experience.

I've been in the corner of hiring an up and comer over any retread, although i would have been happy with Billy D, or even MDA. I'll be honest, the thought of hiring an Unseld, or Ham or Craig, or Udoka kind of scares me. It seems like there won't be much inbetween when you hire someone like that. Either they'll be really good, or they'll be terrible, and there's a lot at stake with this hire.

But we have kept things extremely close to the vest so they may not leak until after the hire.

I think candidates who don’t make the final group will leak that they aren’t interested to save face.

They don’t have to save any face if no one knows that they even interviewed.

Expect them to talk to 3-4 finalists. Team ended up interviewing nine candidates for before whittling down that number.

I want to talk about this for a minute. How amazing is it that we have interviewed 9 people and only 1 has leaked? That is pretty wild.

Also we have to assume that a lot of those interviews were done via Zoom. If any relatively high profile coaches had come in town, we probably would have heard at least one of them. If Griffin went somewhere its likely he'd be spotted.

Although we are the Pelicans so I guess no one cares, but still, incredible to keep this close to the vest.

Its quite impressive. Considering Lue is the only one we know about and he is high profile, is it possible we haven't talked to many other high profile guys? I feel like we would hear news about most high profile coaches other than maybe Atkinson.
