Omer Asik = Ryan Bowen
Watching the Nuggets game last night, I noticed a familiar face sitting on the Denver bench. Everyone's favorite 2008 Hornet --- Ryan Bowen. I still remember Bowen sending shockwaves through the hive when he would finish off a fast break with a fundamentally sound lay-up. He was the common man's hero.

Last night, I swore I had a flashback to 2008.

Omer caught the ball about 12 feet from the basket, standing by himself.. in fact I think the nearest defender actually backed away from him once he had the ball.. He hesitated. Looked for a teammate.. perhaps even considered calling timeout or just punting the ball into the stands. But instead, he lifted his ill-defined Turkish arms into the air, dug down deep into his bacteria-riddled gut, and hoisted the ball toward the goal. It rattled around the rim like one of those rigged carnival games where the ball doesn't ACTUALLY fit in the goldfish bowl.. but just as we all finished screaming out a collective "god NO, why is he shoo---", the ball gracefully fell through the net. An hour and a half later, the Pelicans rode Asik's momentum to pull away from the Nuggets and secure a win.

Ignoring the fact that he costs 40 times what Bowen did, I think Asik may have found his place. Rondo and Nelson are smart enough to know that he has no business touching the ball. He's still a force on the glass.. and any time he manages to make ANY kind of positive play, the crowd and his teammates react like we just won Finals Game 7. While he'll never match Bowen's "already an assistant coach" haircut, Asik is already filling the pale, frumpy mold that Ryan left behind for him.

Ryan Bowen was a golden god.

Don't you EVER speak his name in the same sentence as Asik again.

That's so disrespectful to Bowen.

Edit: Ryan Bowen answered the age old question every child has asked: "what would it look like if my dad played in the NBA?"

It would look like Ryan Bowen.

re: Omer Asik = Ryan Bowen
Asik's only focus should be rebound, defend, and demolish opposing guards on screens. If he can do that for 10 minutes without completely derailing the offense, then hopefully we can avoid making some stupid win now trade of the 1st for an expiring.

I don't understand how Asik is able to block people the way he does on his "Wall" screens that have gotten Jrue some wide open 3s. He doesn't just stand there, he actually moves forward, but without fouling. It's like the defenders are afraid of touching him so they just go along peacefully.

Pels last night in the 40 mins Boogie was on the court -- +1

In the 8 mins Asik was on -- +8

If they switched minutes last night, Pels win by 40. Just saying

re: Omer Asik = Ryan Bowen
One of his few positives is how quickly he gets the outlet pass off after pulling down a rebound..

They should run a drill for him where any time he touches the ball on offense, his goal should be to get it to ANYONE else as quickly as possible. How do you say "hot potato" in Turkish?

Worst comes to worst, we would get that scene from Semi-Pro where Farrell keeps calling for the ball in the post and then sending it back out

This. I was waiting for an illegal screen call last night and he never got one.

In his limited minutes so far, Asik is doing the exact job he was brought in for. And doing it very effectively.

But you can’t seriously believe that if Asik played 38 minutes and Boogie played 8 that the Pels win by 40.

It's not illegal anymore. If you look in the rules supplement put out in 2014, it's called the Warrior Screen

re: Omer Asik = Ryan Bowen
Of course not.

But I do think Asik's lack of negative plays, great defense, and low usage is a great balance to Boogie

Denver ran a P&R with Boogie's man every possession last night. Not some possessions. Literally every one. Boogie is terrible in space. Points per possession went through the roof

Asik comes in and shuts it down. He also didn't turn it over. Pels finally separated from Nuggets in that stretch.

There is more to the game than raw stats. Boogie was great last night but he also hurts almost as much as he helps. When Jrue is playing like he was last night, Asik just helps, no hurt

Omer Asik= Omer Asik. There is literally no comparison. Ryan Bowen would probably put up 50 on Asik.

re: Omer Asik = Ryan Bowen
I made the comment in the game thread, Asik got switchwed onto Gary Harris on the perimeter 1 on 1 with minimal/no help behind him and shockingly stood his ground, not letting Harris get by him and forcing him into a rushed, contested off balance mid range miss. I was amazed.

The quick outlet pass after defending and rebounding has long been his thing

We're so critical and angry about Omer Asik, his contract, missing time all the time, but I don't think we cheer for anyone as loud either

Obviously he was amped from the buzz in the arena after a previous lay-up.. Normally doesn't let himself get so sloppy with the ball.

One hand!?

This has always been a strong, often overlooked part of his game. Wish AD could pick up a little bit of that

re: Omer Asik = Ryan Bowen
You could probably crash a small European car into Asik and do no damage.. I think it would be better for the Pelicans if every defensive possession started with AD going and standing out of bounds to avoid contact.
