I think he could still be useful even if that was his ceiling. We need a matchup center and Oden could be a wealthy man's Aaron Gray. Not playing back to backs and having minutes limits shouldn't be a problem for the most part.
So, he's a matchup center that won't be available for all possible matchups. I just think that really kind of limits his value.

Just because he's been riddled by injuries doesn't mean he always will be. Nor does it mean he doesn't have any upside left.

Of course it does. His potential, when healthy, raises his value to $3 million.

To be fair: There's not THAT many big frontcourts these days:
Memphis
Indy
Bulls
Utah?
Detroit
Dwight(lol)
Half of those are in the east

That's like saying just because 1+1 has always equaled 2, doesn't mean it has to always equal 2.

Being a matchup center implies he's only needed for certain matchups. Maybe you have to pick which game he plays if Houston and Memphis are back to back, but for the most part I think you could survive by giving his minutes to Stiemsma.

Then why is he needed? Seems more and more like a really expensive lottery ticket.
I know that you aren't in the Oden or Bust camp, so the question is more rhetorical for you.

Because when you're playing center by committee the the center position is obviously improved by having better committee members available.

No, it's exactly the opposite of saying that.
Because 1 + 1 will always equal 2 for the entirety of world history.
There is absolutely a chance that Greg Oden gets back to being a solid NBA role player and never experiences a serious injury again.
The odds of that may not be strong, but there is a chance.

Jester is my least favorite poster and it's not just because of his thoughts in this thread.

it's not like that at all

I don't know about you, but saying that we "could survive" doesn't really sound ideal to me

Keyword there.

Neither does "we only wasted $3,000,000."

Why is your vag bleeding? Seriously, you are a hair away from going full meltdown, it seems.

Getting this thread back on track (and this may have been mentioned through all the bullshite), Oden apparently wants to go to a team with the least amount of pressure.
Welcome, Greg.

For 1 year? Who else are we doing to spend it on?
Isn't the deal supposed to give us a team option for the 2nd year?

Ideal and best available options are 2 different things. If I told you Toronto was giving us Aaron Gray but because of our current depth he'd only play in 55 games averaging 10-15 mpg, would you really say no?
If Oden can't play at all you obviously get nothing, but if he can play some, I don't think a part time mathchup center for $2.65 million is a bad use of that cap space.

Welcome, Greg.
Is this a new revelation or a repeating of the same stories from last week? If it's new Tim Hardaway sure didn't help by saying signing Oden would lead to a 3rd title for the Heat.

I caught the end of First Take when they said this.
