Now that Training Camp is here...what are your roster concerns going into the season?

Obviously we are all excited, and this might be the top to bottom best roster we have ever had in NOLA. Its just a great mix and a great group of guys.

But every team has some concerns and issues, and can get better.

What issues with the roster do you have going into the season?

Mine is the same as its been all offseason:

Backup Guard rotation early in the season.

Graham just wasn't particularly good last year. Jose I love, but I see him as guy that comes in for energy and to rally the backups a bit and spot defense, rather than a full time 18-20 minute a game backup PG (I think Jose is a hard enough worker that this could change though). And I cannot see them playing together much as they are both undersized.

Dyson is unlikely to get early run unless he's just Herb-level amazing in camp. Kira is coming off of injury and won't be available for the first few weeks, and really hasn't done much in his career yet to earn minutes.

Obviously you could have Naji play some SG in minutes but I wouldn't say that's ideal.

Others may have different concerns. What are yours?

Only concern is Willie trying to play too many guys in the rotation and it could potentially cost us some games early on. If he’s trying to play 10+ guys every night, it’s going to be hard to get your core guys situated and allow your bench to settle into their roles.

We have a glaring hole at backup big. It’s one thing to bring Larry off the bench as a center, but a whole different ball game if Jonas goes down. Could ruin our season.

Otherwise just our overall ability to defend with four starters that are predominantly offensive first players. That’s tricky.

I still think the bench could use a good 2 or 3 wing. I do expect Dyson to play fairly early in those roles, but would also love just a solid veteran that we could rely on. But hey, what team isn’t saying that right now or any season.

A legit point guard. I don't know if a part time pg rotation of CJ/HERB/BI/Zion works

How do we have a glaring hole at backup C? People really give Billy no credit. Besides Nance who is damn good in his own right when has Billy never stepped up when we needed him to? I remember many nights he started and gave us 15 & 10 each night out. Not bad for your 3rd center.

I hope they make a trade early in the yr for backup guard help.

Zion looks mature in the face. Dude has lost some of that baby fat.

Tm3 looks ready.

I'd say what our "center by committee" is missing is a good rebounding, blue collar big. Tristan Thompson, Hassan Whiteside, Boogie, and Dwight Howard are all unsigned and I wouldn't be shocked if at least 2-3 of them stay unsigned until later in the season waiting for a playoff team to pick them up down the stretch.

You'd obviously have to cut Temple to create a roster spot for any of them, but I think there will be options to expand the ability of the center by committee if JV goes down. So I wouldn't be worried about this contingency as something that needs to be solved now.

Griff himself said he's not a playoff rotation worthy big. He can hold his own scoring but he's small and can't jump which makes him a liability on defense. I looked at his MVP highlights and to me it looked like he fits the international game much more than he got better and is now ready for a bigger role in the NBA.

Honestly we're lucky to have him considering what he could probably do in Europe, but he has real limitations in this league that he'll probably never be able to overcome.

I guess this is not roster related...but my main concern...is to make sure Trey and Dyson get enough minutes early in the season. I want both of these guys to be rollin'...by midseason...and sittin' on "G", waitin' on "O"...by playoff time.

you covered it nicely.
my version:
jv is a liability vs pnr.

only herb is elite defense of the starters.

I don't really see top tier 3 pt shooting from the backcourt.

my view is they need some people to improve on D or shooting which makes it a prayer if they are to snag 6th seed or better and get out of first round.
zion d
hayes d
herb shooting.
Daniels shooting.

no problems
ingram. showed up nicely in playoffs. he came through big time.

cj is wonderful as leader.
nothing to write home about as shooter. just a guy as they say.

Graham was an overpay.

looking at the pieces you can see why Vegas o/u is 44.5.

getting the team rotations right in just a few preseason games seems a tremendous challenge.

most of the west teams are really good.
and once kahwi and Jj jr are at their best those teams will be a big problem.
gsw is already a big problem.
suns too.
Mavs know who they are.
Minnesota is coming.
the competition is very good.

Nothing more than health and understanding the roles.

If healthy 55 wins is doable.

Health is the only major concern. Other than that it’s just attitudes and chemistry.

Hayes could lose minutes to Willy/ Nance and get pissy.

Graham could lose minutes to Jose/ Kira/ DD and get pissy.

It will be interesting to see how those 2 guys fit/ play this year along with the additions of DD/ Kira that are essentially unknowns at the moment.

Legit point guard

Is it wrong to think that he was/is just simply both of these things last year? He’s pretty well backed up by counting stats, advanced stats, and eye test as a backup PG. He rarely turned the ball over and his defensive playmaking basically makes up for any turnovers he has. His shot started to look better towards the end of the year, and he shot well in Puerto Rico games.

I’m fully on board with Jose as a legitimate backup point guard. He just goes in and makes the team better, don’t overthink it because he’s short

If Jose has worked on his 3-pt shooting and can hit at a decent number, then he's going to play big minutes this season and will end up closing a lot of games.

I've said before I've stopped doubting Jose. Despite his limitations he just plays winning basketball. He'll let us know when he's hit his ceiling.
