Nicolo Melli Outlook
I find it odd how much everyone seems to be penciling in this guy to be a significant contributor and play so many minutes after going through the minutes played thread.

Don't get me wrong, i hope he transitions great here and is an instant contributor, but i'm having a hard time just assuming he's some proven commodity signing like everyone seems to assume he is, both on here and in the media.

He's 6'9 235 and 28 years old, so he's not some youngin.
His stats are pretty pedestrian. Under 3 threes taken a game, granted he has been very consistent at that 40% mark the last 5 years, which is great. Not a big scorer at all with his single digit ppg averages.

He does seem to have a fairly quick release, and from his highlights i've seen the one foot Ryno special fadeaway that i hate, but it shows he has some skill as well as confidence. He does look like a good shooter though, but we just assume b/c he took a few threes in the Euroleague that he'll be able to do that in the NBA. If he has the right confident attitude, then i think his shooting can translate, talking about open set 3's. i think he's going to have some adjusting to some of the bigs quickly closing out on him that he wasn't use to in europe, and i hope that adjustment is a very short one and he can give us 2-3 made 3's a game.

I just think people see his name, he's european, his size, and assume we are getting the next Mirotic. He's the same age, shorter, and a lot lighter than Mirotic. If he was anywhere near as good as him, he'd probably have made it in the NBA by now. He worked out for a bunch of NBA teams in 2013 and they deemed him too light and not physical enough to play in the NBA.

Granted i have zero knowledge of what this guy can do, or what he has done other than looking at stats, but i'm not impressed, and i don't expect much from him. Langdon has a good history of finding these guys, so i'll trust him and look forward to seeing this guy prove me wrong, but i'm a bit worried that we are assuming this guy is penciled in as a sure contributor for us, especially talking about him playing minutes at the 5.

We have 2 guys that we know can play down low, Favors and Okafor. Obviously Zion can be penciled in as a down low guy, but after that and including Zion, it's a couple of guys with zero NBA experience that will be playing the 4/5 for us this year. That has me concerned a bit. And i am very high on Hayes, and I think he'll get, or eventually get, more minutes that most are predicting.

Unlike Mirotic, we are not counting on him for huge minutes...I see him as a bench shooter, 10-12 minutes a game.

It’s not us, it’s the team that has inserted him into a prominent role. Langdon has been stalking since last year. Griffin has talked about him instead of other NBA proven spacers like Hart and Miller. He also said Finch has been working on sets that play to some of his strengths.

I agree that on paper he’s an unknown that needs to prove himself, but the team has a vision and with everything else we’ve seen so far I don’t think Melli is where we should draw the line in the sand “Ok Griff, you had me believing until you said Melli will have an immediate impact as a reserve. “

I get all that, i just still find it odd how much they assume he'll be a significant contributor.

He's an unknown in the NBA, but he's our backup 4, and we expect him to play 20mpg. That just seems crazy to me.

I'd say, and hope, a good comparison for him will be Nemanja Bjelica, who's a similar size player. Came into the league at age 27, played 18mpg for the Wolves at hit 38% from 3 taking two 3's a game. He's gotten better every year the last 4 years. So i guess there's some precedence in older Euro guys coming over in year 1 and being able to contribute.

I can promise i won't lose all belief, or even a little belief in our FO if Melli doesn't work out.
I'm just concerned how little proven depth we have down low on this team.

I don’t necessarily see him as a huge contributor but I wouldn’t judge him based on Euroleague stats.

They play a different style of game over there that has far less scoring than the NBA.

It was stated that he excels at a particular kind of dribble-handoff play that Gentry really likes to run. It's about fit as much as anything else. But yeah, you don't pay a guy over $4 million a year unless you expect him to play. You can sign guys at the minimum to ride the pine.

I could have swore I read that he turned down several offers from NBA teams in the past.

This is a good thing. He's not a developmental project.

He's a role player, which is what he was signed to be.

From my understanding, they are different types of players. Mirotic was much more of a scorer type of player before coming to the NBA (with potential to be an all around type of player), where as Melli is known more for his shooting and rebounding/defense (a role player in Euroleague, and expected role player here).

It seems to me like the team has a clearly defined role for Melli. They aren't bringing him over because they think he has potential to be an allstar (which is why Mirotic was brought over earlier in his career). The team expects him to be a role player, so I'll trust them on that. I don't think they are expecting him to be a Mirotic, rather a JaMychal Green, Kelly Olynyk, Ilyasova type.

I understand he was a role player, and will be one here, but he's an unproven NBA role player.
$5M/yr isn't nothing. He's expected to contribute.

Funny you bring up JaMychal Green, someone I had been saying we should look to sign for that backup 4 role on the cheap all offseason.
He signed the same deal Melli did but with the Clips.

The team obviously sees something in him that makes them certain he can produce in that role.
I look forward to him contributing.

I'm not trying to be negative about Melli in particular, i'm just concerned with the lack of proven depth down low, and i have my concerns on how productive he'll be.

Right, but he was never really an option. He basically held out until the Clippers used their cap space, and then re-signed with them.
