But if the NBA does return, team executives told CNBC they favored Las Vegas as a possible location to conclude the season. And media experts agreed, adding the decision could help the NBA retain some of its revenue domestically and perhaps in China.

...The NBA could decide to cancel the remainder of its regular season and create a play-in tournament for lower-seeded teams to enter the postseason. The league could then set up a best-of-five series for the first round, before moving to a one-and-done tournament to determine the two teams that will play in the NBA Finals, which would also be a best-of-five, people familiar with the planning said.

The tournament and NBA Finals would be held in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion, where the league hosts its annual Summer League events.

...Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was a guest on CNBC’s town hall on the coronavirus pandemic Wednesday night. When discussing a possible return, he predicted the NBA would start playing games without fans as the league waits for a coronavirus treatment to become available.

Like Silver, Cuban expressed optimism the NBA would return “as early as we can, without spectators, just on TV and streaming and just give people something to celebrate.”

If they're only playing in one location I guess the earlier rounds with more teams would be like March Madness with games going all day long? If people are still quarantined the ratings should be strong.

This is extremely confusing to me.

So the first round would be best of 5, then its one and done until the FInals, which would be best of 5?

Yeah, going best of 5 then 1 and done made zero sense. I think this article is just a mish mash of rumors. The important thing is they seem to have league sources pointing to Vegas as a central location and resuming the season from a central location makes a lot of sense.

Wouldn't it make more sense to do one and done early, and then longer series later?

For sure. They don’t want just one game of the Finals. I could even see best of 3 in the early rounds to accommodate more games in the later rounds if they aren’t afraid of upsets.

they are.

both portland and memphis get a starter and a key reserve back.

this is so memphis doesnt get the 8th seed and stomp old lebron. he will need weeks to get back in form.
memphis doesnt have anyone 30.

This is what I said the night NBA suspended operations:

I think if this doesn’t come back until like May, then all teams play a few exhibition games and then you do a NCAA-style, single elim tourney until the final four then do best of 3 followed by best of 5

Why not just make the finals 7 games like normal at that point? That article as written is insane.

I’d watch a play in tournament but it wouldn’t “save the season”. It would be a poor substitute.

Players union won't agree to any of that.

Season will be canceled.

The problem with that line of thinking is the CBA actually has pandemics written into it. If the NBA wanted to it could not pay the players for the games they missed. If the choice is play in a tournament in Vegas or lose 1/3 of your annual wages, I think the union will be open to come up with solutions to save the season.

The CBA has a lot of things written into it that the union complains about after the fact, which is dumb in its own right, but besides the point. Considering that the NBA was patient zero in all of this with the whole Gobert thing, you can bet that they will be the last league to pick up a ball, even if no fans are in the crowd, once the world has some form of handle on this.

If I had give odds right now, I'd say that canceling the season is overwhelmingly the favorite.

You still need to have a mini-camp of sorts to get players back into shape before resuming the season and by that point, you don't want this thing to eat up into next season if at all possible.

I don’t see it happening. Three Knicks tested positive today for COVID plus there like another two dozen players who have it. Season is over and draft will be pushed back.

It probably will be at least mid- June before any consideration is given to resuming some kind of play. And that’s shaky.

Garrett temple just did an interview, he’s big in the NBAPA, and he said once they get the 15 min tests up and running the sentiment amongst the players is they’re ready to play.
