No he could not. I keep seeing this stupid shite like AD was just doin the Pels a favor. This summer AD either signs the supermax extension or not. If not, the Pels know he is not re-signing and have plenty of time to trade him for value.

Instead of being quite behind the scenes, AD and his agent went nuclear trying to force a trade to the Lakers early and undermine the Pels. It failed.

He was fined for tampering.

And while it may not be about "class" but demanding to play is extremely shitty on his part IMO.

well, technically this is true. He most certainly has been booed before. So the statement is correct. He didnt say that he has been booed by the home fans before. So he being manipulative, but not untruthful

Publicly requesting a trade to LA with 1,5 years left under contract is NOT acting with class. Less than a week after a blown call that robbed New Orleans of a Superbowl appearance. And he requests a trade to LA. He expects not to be booed? Ok

It's tone deaf to the city he lives in. It's a slap in the face to his team mates. It's a big pile of dookie on the fans.

Plus his Dad attempting to sabotage our negotiating leverage as well as AD letting reports leak that he felt the Pels are run as second class citizens compared to the Saints.

He did not handle this well at all.

I will always be thankful he told us when he did. I am not going to pretend like he did it to serve our interests, but it did.

I told you guys a few weeks earlier that he was gonna tell us at the AS break and the two sides wouldn't leak it until June.

If he would have stuck to that plan, I could have easily seen the Pels becoming buyers as opposed to sellers. So, I thank him for that. My only wish is that he would go to his home in Cali to prepare for next year. Who knows maybe if NOLA keeps getting all this snow, he will ;)

Let's not act like this latest mess was Lebronthony Davis acting in the best interest of the Pelicans. He knew his best shot to be a Laker was to force a trade before the deadline. He could have waited, but unlike Lebron and Durant, who were on contending teams, he didn't want to waste the 19-20 season here too. Durant and Lebron were still competing for championships while their deals expired.

ETA: honestly, our fan base should be pumped we sucked this year with how this has panned out. I could have seen a scenario where anything short of a WCF run and competitive series, AD wouldn’t sign the extension in the offseason, and we’d be trying to convince him to stay next year before he ups and leaves in free agency anyways much like LBJ and KD. It’s definitely a possibility.

I don’t know how the NBA can fix this specific issue, but it completely undermines the concept of a team: Stars grabbing max deals while thinking, “I’ll grab the money now, and if we don’t get better, I’ll just push for a trade.” AKA... Pulling a Carmelo.

Silver is weak and the power players know it. The pelicans being the ones having threats of penalties levied against them and not the AD/Lakers side of things really says it all.

Stern was a dick but i don’t think he would have allowed this circus to take place

Violating the CBA has never once been labeled as classy.

re: kushner...pels need to stop pretending

AD has acted with class.
-Public trade demand by his agent
-Made it known that he would only sign an extension this summer if he was traded to the Lakers and would be a one year rental for any other team. Pretty much to torpedo the trade market so it would be easier to force the Pels to trade him to LA.

How is that acting with class?

quote:

Or AD could have pulled a Shaq or KD & walked leaving the Pelicans with absolutely nothing
When Shaq and KD walked in free agency, there wasn't a super max contract. If AD would've turned that down this summer, then the writing was on the wall and if the Pels didn't trade him and he walked for nothing, that's all on Demps.

No one is claiming AD's motives were completely altruistic. Can an individual like AD not act in their own best interests / happiness as well?

AD was under no circumstances re-signing with the Pelicans anyway & theyll probably blow whatever trade returns they acquire (just as they have with 7 years of AD). Whatever.

I much rather see the teams that gamble he'll re-sign( even if reports are he won't) get burned if he walks in Free Agency, actually.

Had he told them privately he wasn't resigning and wanted to be traded, the Pels could have said thank you for letting us know, is there anything we can do to keep you, he says no, we say thank you but we don't think we can facilitate a trade that is in our best interest before the deadline but we will aggressively look to find the right trade in the offseason.
At that point, if things went public, it would have been b/c of the Pelicans letting it go public, not AD, who did it solely to try to get traded to the Lakers before the deadline.

re: kushner...pels need to stop pretending
not sure how many people read this from McCann.

Can Pels Run Afoul or NBA's Anti-Tanking, Anti-Resting Rules After Keeping Davis?

he starts with all the reasons the Pels have for not playing Davis. then he lays out NBA's legal authority explicity, while also pointing out the practice of tanking by teams for decades. some of it punished severely, some of it not

quote:

NBA commissioner Adam Silver has discretion to fine a team at least $100,000 for resting a healthy player—particularly in a “high-profile, nationally televised game.” As explained below, Silver could rely on other powers contained in the NBA constitution to impose additional penalties on the Pelicans. This means that if the Pelicans accepted a $100,000 per game fine as a de facto insurance policy to protect Davis’s health, Silver could punish the team in other ways, including by suspending team officials.

quote:

The NBA Constitution governs the legal relationship between teams, owners and the NBA. Article 13(g) clearly outlaws “tanking”, the colloquial word used to describe teams that intentionally take steps to reduce their chances of winning games. Article 13(g) dictates that an “attempt to lose or control of the score” of a game can lead to an owner being expelled from the league. In addition, the commissioner is empowered under Article 24 to take any necessary action to protect “the best interests of the Association.” Any such actions are “final, binding, conclusive, and unappealable.” Further, the commissioner can invoke Article 35A, which permits the commissioner to indefinitely suspend or fine up to $1 million any non-player who, in the commissioner’s opinion, is “guilty of conduct prejudicial or detrimental to the Association.”

quote:

Yet for the NBA, tanking runs afoul of its business model and, arguably, its legal representations to fans. Even though a team might correctly intuit that the franchise would win more games in the long-run by losing more games in the short-run, the NBA is premised on delivering competitive basketball games where teams always try to win. The league also markets games as competitive contests. The NBA is not like the WWE where fights are to some extent scripted and the winner is pre-determined. The NBA, like the other major leagues, is a competitive pro league.

pretty directly addresses the straw man Melo/Parsons comps.

quote:

Demps might have wondered why the Memphis Grizzlies could hold out Chandler Parsons even after the forward was cleared to play on Dec. 21. The Grizzlies did not reportedly suffer an accompanying league punishment. To rebut that point, one distinction is that Parsons is a reserve player who even if suited up for the Grizzlies might not have played much, if at all. Davis, in contrast, is a franchise player whose presence on the court will substantially impact whether the Pelicans win or lose.

also hits on the league's recent push for legalized gambling and how scratching a healthy Davis would impact bettors

quote:

With the NBA trying to carefully incorporate sports betting into its culture, league officials are surely mindful of the optics of teams resting healthy stars and how that practice could be misused to alter the outcomes of games.

and lastly, the NBAPA's role in all of this

quote:

At first glance, Davis resting for the remainder of the 18-19 season might not seem damaging to him. For one, Davis would still be paid.

quote:

Yet missed games could nonetheless damage Davis’s professional interests as an NBA player and interfere with his career.

quote:

First, judges have found that healthy players missing games can amount to “irreparable harm,” meaning the kind of harm that cannot be adequately remedied by money damages.

quote:

if the Pelicans went ahead and sat Davis, the player and his union, the National Basketball Players’ Association, could file a grievance under Article XXVI of the collective bargaining agreement. Article XXCI refers to team rules and team discipline. The NBPA could argue that Davis being kept out of games is a form of punishment akin to an administrative suspension (where an employee is excluded from work activities but still paid). To be sure, the Pelicans have substantial authority over who plays in games. No grievance arbitrator would endorse players grieving over lack of playing time. Yet here, the team would be sitting its best player who is healthy and, though fined $50,000 by the NBA for making a public trade demand, has not violated any known team rules.

finally, he lays out the ways the Pels will subvert the league's decree

quote:

if Davis suffers a mild injury, the team could hold him out much longer than necessary. Alternatively, Gentry might play Davis fewer minutes and thus decrease the odds that Davis suffers an injury.

quote:

The Pelicans could also “rest” Davis in the same vein that playoff teams occasionally rest players prior to the playoffs

The Knicks traded away their highest ppg guy and then cut one of the guys they traded for in Mathews, who would have started for them.
They then cut the guy on their team with the highest PER, and had been sitting him out for the last 12 games, while healthy. where's the slap on the wrist for sitting healthy Kanter? I know he's not AD, but he's a starter and one of the best players on their shitty team.

Seems like the Knicks are blatantly making moves to not win games.
So what I learned is that it's ok to tank if you cut your best players, but it's not ok to tank if you sit your best players.

mediocre player on a god awful contract that help get them a 2nd year lottery pick they are playing (and they should have just drafted last year), an unprotected future first, and a top 10 protected future 1st.

quote:

then cut one of the guys they traded for in Mathews

a vet who asked to be released by the team so he could go play for a team in the playoffs

quote:

slap on the wrist for a mediocre player they were holding out for a potential trade? again, they mutually agreed to part ways so Kanter can go sign somewhere else.

quote:

the Knicks had a star player express that he wouldn't resign with them. the Knicks traded that star player away and began a process for rebuilding. the expiring contracts of vets they had on the roster or received in the trade were then waived per mutual agreement between the team and the player

that's not quite what is happening in NO.

i am sorry you read all of the article and only pulled that from it. that's too bad for you
