Kushner: Discussions with SVG have gone very well, there is “mutual respect” there.
Not earth shattering news or anything but figured I’d report it.

quote:

I’ve been told by several people the discussions between David Griffin and Stan Van Gundy have gone very well, and there’s “an obvious mutual respect there”.

This isn’t to say SVG is the front runner — but he’s clearly a viable candidate.

I think it’s pretty clear he’s the front runner

lol his name wasn’t even on anyone’s list a week ago. And he’s the only one we know of on the list right now, correct?

He was on my list 4 days ago before the report of him being a finalist came out. Does that count?

I would love that hire. Milwaukee has done it the right way. I do think he can win here. Good catch .

I don't feel strongly about any particular assistant that comes from a great coaching tree or system, so I'm lukewarm on Hamm and Craig. Our last two HCs here were hailed as seasoned and ready from the Popovich coaching tree and Warriors dynasty. It means nothing. A coach either has "it" to get player buy-in or he doesn't, and that's hard to judge assistants.

I really wish we’d be more creative. But he’s definitely an upgrade from Alvin

I said it from the beginning, I was hoping for an “inspired” hire. Someone that wasn’t necessarily a big name but that was out the box thinking. Taking a chance.

When it became clear that Griffin was definitely not going to go in that direction, that he wanted a very established guy to guide a young team and to minimize risk to him...well we have to live with that and pick a guy that fits those criteria that will also do a good job.

SVG is as good of a retread that we can get.

Report was we have two finalist interviews next week. Would be really poor form to promise something like that only to signal back to them that they were never really in consideration. Especially if any of those were people associated with the organization currently.

I believe they’re assistant level too, so they’re probably coaches Griff is considering as lead assistants if he hires Stan. I’d expect them to proceed as well.

And I would bet out of respect and maintaining a good reputation, Griffin would probably wait a couple of days after those interviews to make any announcement.

But who knows.
