KOC: the Pelicans are “desperate” to sign Kyle Lowry, “terrified” of Zion situation

KOC today, says the Pelicans and David Griffin are desperate for Kyle Lowry.
Lowry is their first option this free agency. They’re terrified about the Zion situation and know they need to make the playoffs this year.
They see Lowry as a culture changer for the Pels.
I hope to god KOC is wrong

He's not quoting sources, he's casually characterizing the situation and I don't think he's being very careful choosing his words. I would imagine this isn't new info, it's him probably getting whatever Stein got when he initially broke the story of our interest in Lowry. He and his podcast partner both doubt the Pels land him and assume other teams like Miami and Philly would be higher on his list.

Could there be a more blatant attempt by Lowry's agent to try to bid up the market for Lowry?
[Edit: But I do like the fit of Lowry on our team.]

I didn’t listen to it. I don’t listen to Ringer stuff.
That sounds about right.
I think the general perception around the league is that we are totally fricked (which is crazy) and will do desperate things.

Yeah, thats agent trying to drive his price up from one of the desperate teams like Lakers or Philly

I don't understand this either. We were 10 games under .500 and could have easily been in the playoffs if we knew how to close out games.
I just don't understand how a generational talent like Zion can't draw any decent players to our team.
Griff is under pressure to make a move, and we need to empty the war chest at some point. Why not just make the Raptors an offer they can't refuse?

Because KL isn’t worth that.

I listened to that podcast(at least where I think this came from) and this is another case where taking the written word from a statement completely removes the proper context(and on the Lowry part is just wrong).
He did say that the Zion frustration is very real, whether Pels fans want to believe it or not, it’s real. And this is really make or break time for the Zion era because not sure it will be reconcilable if he misses the playoffs again and Green is a bust. That the Pels like Kyle Lowry and Griff has always really liked Lowry and thinks incredibly highly and would like him in New Orleans. See him as a culture setter(and both KOC and Vernon strongly agreed with that sentiment). But also said there are several directions Pels may go depending on the market.
Also more interesting was that the impression he gets talking to people is that we are not exactly married to Lonzo and sort of are ready to move on. That one GM has told him that there is likely to be more sign and trades of RFA’s than has ever happened in league history. It’s just a perfect storm this year.

We gonna give this dude a 3-4 yr deal. Ughhhh

I agree. Maybe we can get him for a decent trade. I just know Griff is going to overpay for someone.

This is beyond absurd. It’s year 3 and he missed almost all of year 1. He’s played 1 collective season.
This says more about Zion than us in my opinion.

god i'm terrified of Griffin's insistence on finding these "stand up guys" and "culture setters"
We're gonna make a big list of guys who played really hard for (1) winning teams or (2) their next contract, and give them some stupid arse huge deal that we'll never get out from under when they decide "hey i'm in new orleans now.. time to half arse it"

It's really not absurd if you look at it thru the lens of him (or more likely his family) never wanting to be in NOLA in the first place...
His situation, to me, is nearly identical to Shaquille O'Neal, except for the part where Shaq willed a team to the finals... He was always going to leave, and nothing we throw at him will change it

Imagine being that terrified and Willie Green being the guy you peg as your next HC

I mean it is what it is.
But again, it’s better the hear stuff like this than read Twitter quotes.
He didn’t say he’s going to demand a trade or opt into his qualifying offer. And in the other breathe both of them also said that the Green hire is the most important hire for the Pels and maybe of any coaching hire because if Green delivers, he could make Zion want to be here for a long time.
The frustration thing came off like it is mostly about not winning.

I don’t think they are actually terrified.
Concerned maybe.

Zion came to Summer League out of shape. The bubble out of shape. This season, in so-so shape
My thing is: Dont worry about the FO. Lets see you come into camp in best shape of your life. Control what you can control. Do that & dominate, and still lose, and then you can complain
Quote from Mac. Say what you want about him, but I fully agree with this.

It's could all be true but this is the NBA so it doesn't work that way.
