Per Shams - Kawhi is signing a 3 year deal for $103M with a player option in year 3.

This is a new development. Basically a 1+1... zero percent chance he takes that PO without injury or something crazy. He'll hit the market as a 10yr max candidate

Also means in two years, the league will have another shot at him.

Fun Fact - The New Orleans Pelicans project to have 10 year max space in 2021.

ETA: I worded it wrong but frick it. I meant it will work the same way as the 1+1, giving him UFA after year 10.

What I am more curious about is what other maneuvering this opens for the Clip Show.

Montrel Hazell has been on Twitter implying something shocking will happen today. Kawhi signing a 2+1 isn’t it, but it could open the cap space for it.

Yep

There’s a reason Kawhi has stalled on signing. The Clippers are about to pull off another move

How is it a 1+1 if the PO is in year 3?

Just curious, is that assuming we do not resign Brandon Ingram or Lonzo?

I really have no idea what our cap situation looks like in 3 years if we end up extending both BI and Lonzo

The 3 years might also indicate a sign and trade with Toronto as all sign and trades have to be at least 3 years (Keith Bogans rule).

Though probably has more to do with the 10 year vet max

I did. What I meant is it is going to work the same way the 1+1 they discussed for Toronto would have. It will get him UFA after his 10th year.

this makes sense b/c then they'd have his bird's rights

if he only accumulates 2 years, they won't have the cap to sign him i don't believe

*ETA: Early Bird's rights may allow him to get to the 10 year max

They would, but I could still see him opting in so that he could get the full Bird 5 year contract at that point.

Such as? Is there anyone left to make a “big move” besides Westbrook? And they aren’t taking him.

It could mean bringing in a key sub, like flipping Harkless and cap space to get someone like Iggy.

They had about $4m in projected cap space before the deal was announced. Kawhi taking less than the max added more space. And they can still order their transactions to pull off trades using a lot of that space.

He didn't take less than max.

The deal is max money, just not max years

Whoops. Don’t think they will S&T because it hardcaps them. But they could structure it to create space, sign someone else, trade for Kawhi into space, trade for PG with Gallo + Shai.
