Kawhi Decision impact on AD trade

With kawhi potentially waiting after July 6, the lakers could execute the AD trade on July 6 which takes them out of the Kawhi sweepstakes

Give it up. Lakers are in the hunt for him. They aren’t the favorites though. As of right now they are saying no team is the favorite. Our best hope is he realizes lebron isn’t going to let that be his team no matter how many times he says he will.

It doesn’t necessarily take them out they just won’t be able to offer a max if the AD trade is done first, by my understanding.

Staying in Toronto 1-2 more years makes sense to me.
Win another Championship there and see how these other teams pan out.
Then move if you want.

Too bad Kawhi doesn’t do social media. Lakers fans can be very off putting. I think if he was active like most other players the Laker fans would make his decision that much easier.

I think he'll make a decision by tomorrow, but I'm glad he has dragged this out as long as he has. It has left the Lakers with no good options.

Kawhi would become one of my all time favorite players if he held a televised press conference to announce his decision.
At the press conference, he either says he’s going to keep his talents in Toronto, or that he’s taking his talents to Los Angeles. If the latter, after a pause for crowd/media reaction, he puts on a Clippers cap.
Would be the GOAT troll job.

Except that it doesn’t
They won’t have a max to offer if the AD trade is done first, sequentially. Cap thing.
And we aren’t waiting on them we want it done on the 6th.
So unless Kawhi will take about 3 mill less than the max a year just to be a Laker (which he may), they need it done by then.

Everything I’ve seen is they’ll be about $500K short of the max, which is chump change. How exactly does that turn to $3M?

You don’t think kawhi knows this

It has to do with the order of execution of all the trades and signings.
I think the deal is that they can sign Kawhi THEN make the trade and send everyone else but Kuzma out, which gives them AD. But that deal executes on July 6.
If Kawhi dithers and that trade executes, he can only sign for whatever room is left after AD arrives. And AD makes more than all the outgoing players combined IIRC plus they end up with incomplete roster charges of $800k a pop.

Oh gotcha. I’m not overly well versed on the semantics as it relates to that.

If the AD trade is done FIRST they will have 29 million in cap space is my understanding.

Or they could just refuse to execute the trade until Kawhi has made his decision. No one will blow it up over a day or two longer. However, I think we get his decision tomorrow.

Would be risky on the Lakers part. Griff could pull the trade then and they’re extremely fricked this year.

Kawhi will decide by tomorrow. I think that he would decide today, but I don't think he wants to announce Toronto on July 4th.

I can see it, but that's dumb.
Like anyone is really going to give a frick if he announced Toronto on 7/4.

most of America would rejoice in the fricking of the Lakers

The Lakers doing this and causing the trade to be cancelled would probably make Pelinka more of a pariah around the league.
Teams have made deals and then made new deals based on this trade.
The impact would end up being a minimum of 5 teams between the Lakers, us, the Wizards, the Hawks, and the Grizzlies.
And the Lakers would get the blame instead of us because they would be trying to unilaterally change things, as our deal was contingent on it executing July 6 so the 4th pick (Hunter) could participate in Summer League.
