just spitballing about the Pelicans after last night

after watching last night's debacle, between a combination of poor coaching, and a lack of leadership on the court and in the Locker room, these birds won't fly.
Coaching:
Monty does not seem to have a handle on these guys. Their defense last night was atrocious in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Our offense is very bland and non-existent.
I don't see why George Karl would not want to come here. We have a pretty good team of young guys for him to work with, ownership is not afraid to spend money.
Players:
I really think we have an Issue with on court leadership. No one has been here long enough to be a force on court and in the locker room. You don't see anyone really taking charge, at least I don't. AD to his credit is young and will hopefully blossom into a leader. but on court when someone blows a coverage and leaves a guy wide open, everyone has this :aww shucks, how'd that happen attitude"
No fire, I kind of want to see someone on court pissed off. I wanna see someone come out and be honest in a presser and say " frick it, yes we played like shite. I am personally and professionally embarrassed". I mean shite guys, they gave the game away last night, no one in those time outs started barking and saying " this stops now, we tighten up the Defense, slow it down on offense, take good shots."
Sorry guys. I am sure I am probably an idiot and ill be refuted with facts and things to show me that I am retarded. I just wanted to say how I feel, and I'm avoiding school work.

GV was that guy last year. Smith should be taking some of that role this year, as should AD. AD was screaming last night at someone when they should have hit him during a fast break, which is good. he should do that more often.

The ideal candidate for this is EG. He is a proven talent, 3rd year on the team, etc. He's just not an extrovert. AD can and will continue to do this but when he's 5 years younger than guys, how much will they listen?

There's a fine line here. You want him to be invested in the game but not to the point where he's calling out players for not giving him the ball. Don't think that will become an issue with him, though.

The last two points are similar.
With a team this young, and only 2 or 3 guys have actually played in the playoffs, there is going to be a lack of leadership. As cliched and dumb as it sounds, no one on this team knows how to win at this level. It takes time in the NBA. Davis will get there and be able to say "frick this shite. We ain't losing," but's he just not ready yet. Holiday/Gordon/Evans have shown neither the skills nor the stones to be THE guy when shite is hitting the fan.
A better coach is most likely necessary, would help the players be more effective, and put them in winning situations more frequently. But there is also a natural learning curve for how to close games out and win road games on a back to back for young players, no matter the coach.

I just feel like if you don't have leaders on the court, You have got to have a coach who is established and is going to hold guys accountable.

Agreed. Been saying that for about a week or so now. It's evident that no one knows who to follow.
It should be Anthony Davis, but he is only a second year player and the Big 3 guards are all just a few years older and are accomplished enough in their own right that it probably chafes them to not be "the guy". It's not toxic by any stretch, but all of these guys have had "franchise player" talk around them before. It will take a lot of pride swallowing and true desire to make the other guys succeed for the guards to gel. Sure these guys are friends and know each other from the AAU days, but all of three of them will have to individually accept that there are things that the other guy does better.
They must buy into there roles and to an extent, a great coach inspires them to do so, but true motivation comes from within. Personally, I'd like to see Holiday off the ball more, maybe playing along side Rivers.
The Rivers-Gordon-Holiday line-up hasn't played much together, nor has the Evans-Gordon-Holiday line-up.

for the exact reasons. Leadership. Karl's rotations in Denver were often despised by fans. He's is a good X's and O's guy, but at this point
I'd think Karl would holdout for a contender to coach for. (Read:when OKC finally pulls the plug on Scotty Brooks).

I agree with you, everyone wants to kind of lay back and not be "the guy", the coaching staff either has to lead, or put these guys in a position for someone to step up.

Agree 100%. We finally saw some of that last night. Still not enough, but having Jrue spot up in the corner for a series of possessions made me happy.
Rivers wasn't really good, but I did like seeing him out there and he deserves some more run. He and Withey looked active. The defense can't get any worse, so I don't see the draw back in playing those guys at this point.

Davis has emerged into a leader this year. He's the only one that brings the fire night-in, night-out. I'm not so sure why you'd think we don't have an on-court leader. He's constantly chatting his guys up on the court.

We all agree that it should be Davis, but if no one follows you're not really leading. This isn't AD's fault necessarily, but that's a lot to ask from a young player,especially one not old enough to drink(Which is another reason why kids shouldn't be in the NBA-but that's another topic). At the age/experience group of Gordon/Holiday/Evans trio (23-25/4-5 years) they on the cusp of being a "veteran" but still young enough where they are learning to be "professional" basketball players.
Emerging teams usually have a veteran player on the roster steering the ship when time gets tough,even when they aren't the "star" player. Golden state is a great example-they emerge late last year around the talents of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and to a lesser extent Harrison Barnes. There coach is not necessarily experienced, having never coached before he got the job. The influence of Jarrett Jack,Andrew Bogut,David Lee and Carl Landry (all guys close to 30) was huge. Those guys are warriors(metaphorically speaking). Look at our bench, Evans(not a 100%) no Ryno and no calming influence, no seasoned player.
Who has real playoff experience? Lou Amundson and Jrue. Both of their playoff time is limited. There isn't a David West or PJ Brown to keep everyone in line right now. This team will have it's bumps, but the potential is there.
