Source confirms the #Pelicans will go into the season with Zylan Cheatham and Josh Gray on two-way contracts. Cheatham averaged 5.8 points and 6.2 rebounds for the Pels in summer league. Gray started every game in SL for Brooklyn. He averaged 12 points, 4.3 rpg and 3.5 apg.

Good for him. Didn't think he could make it in the NBA, or even the G-League. Still don't think he'll ever be able to play even backup minutes in the NBA. He's too small, not a good defender, and not that good on offense. I hear he has improved his shot though. He couldn't shoot 3's to save his life at LSU.

Well thats not a great combination

We'll see how he pans out...will see a lot of time in G League for sure. I was hoping for Fletcher Magee with the second one. I trust in Langdon and Griffin's scouting, so we'll see how this goes.

Why are they wasting time on him if he's that limited? It's not like he'd be playing for a GLeague team in Baton Rouge, he'll be playing in Eerie, PA.

I mean, I didn't really think that there was anyone else on our summer league team worthy of a 2-way contract. The staff might think that they see something that they like in Gray, but it's only Gayle's money.

He still has work but look at his numbers in phoenix. He out played tyler ennis. He is a good teammate very hard worker. He doesn't drink keeps his body up and he rather be I. The gym than the club. If you only knew his story. His mom my first cousin died when he was 15 she was 37. To make it as far as he has and keeps pushing. You want guys like this on your team. Very good locker too guy.

i don't know.
I look at Josh Gray and i think, are you better than Tim Frazier, and the answer is no. at best, he's as good as him, maybe.
He has shot 40% from 3 in the G league, shooting over 4 a game in 95 games.
In college he was abysmal from 3, and he sucked at the free throw line as well, shooting in the 50s and 60s. Shooting over 70% in the G-League. So he obviously improved his shooting tremendously, which is why he's getting this chance more than likely.
I'll give him this, he's very quick, and can just about get around and into the lane on anyone, and is a decent finisher for being so short, but he's very athletic. And the only reason i say he's not a good defender, is b/c he's small. He's listed at 6'1", but that's generous if you ask me, and he isn't a strong small guy like say CP3 is.
WHile looking up his height, found this from his draft profile at draft express. I think i kind of nailed it.

Joshia Gray and Russ Smith measured the shortest of any players in attendance at 5'11 (4th percentile) and 5'11.5(6th percentile) barefoot, respectively. Smith was also the camp's lightest player at 162.5 pounds, only 2.5 pounds heavier than his 2014 NBA Draft Combine weight. The score-first Louisville guard struggled to find his footing on in the competitive action in Chicago. Despite his size, Gray stood out both on the floor and in the athletic testing. The ultra-explosive point guard got into the paint at will, created for others and found ways to make enough shots to keep the defense honest. Gray posted the fifth-best max vertical at the minicamp at 38.5 inches. Although Gray is about 15 pounds heavier, his measurements of 6'1 in shoes with a 6'4.75 wingspan are similar to D-League product Tim Frazier.

Meh. I would rather have given it to Bluiett, Bigby-Williams or Dawkins.

He played in 5 games. You can't come to any conclusions off of that.

That's what i've always heard. I'm very happy for him. His hard work has been paying off and i wish him nothing but the best as an LSU fan. As a Pelicans fan, I would have rather given that to Bigby-Williams. I can see Bigby-Williams playing somewhat productive NBA minutes in the future for a good team. I can't see Josh Gray ever being productive for a good team, but would love him to prove me wrong.

Coach jones changed his game up and it hurt him. Look at Kentucky game. He killed. That's what he could have been at LSU. If given the chance he will help the team. Problem is his height and team too deep at guard unless they run a lot of small ball.

Maybe they want to see how he, or a guy like him, would fit into the system we run. If he has improved his shot, he could also provide bench shooting if we lose a guard to injury.

His game was always fine. It was his shot. It was terrible in college. He played for 3 years and took a lot of threes and free throws, and he was terrible. He could'nt even stay on the court at the end of games for LSU b/c of his free throw shooting.
He's put in the work and has become a really good shooter from what the stats show in the G-League.
Being a small 6 footer was always going to be his problem more than anything. You just can't hide that. It's like being a 7 footer that has cement in his shoes. You're going to get abused on the defensive end to the point where your offense likely won't outweigh your defensive woes.

That's a good point. To a certain degree I'm still trying to figure out what are the 2 ways good for. Finding a Tim Frazier or a Darius Miller that took a little time to prove they were NBA worthy? Does it matter if YOU develop that level of player? Will 2 way contracts restrict the supply of those kinds of players in the future?

By all indications he has worked real hard in the G League since he left LSU and even played 5 games for the Phoenix Suns. Most of the negative comments in this thread are from posters who have not seen him play at all since he left BR. I am going to trust Griffin and Langdon on this one, if they think he deserves a chance lets go for it, the definitely are not trying to appease the LSU fans because most dogged him while he was here anyway.
Gray has the right attitude and outlook.

Gray has the right attitude and outlook.
quote:
“My goal was to come in and show these GMs and scouts that they could trust me with their unit on the third string,” said Gray. “Come in, be a floor general, run my unit, take care of the ball and make the right plays. That’s what’s going to get me a job, and that’s more realistic instead of trying to go out there and score 30 points.”
