She was apparently furious at Rich Paul and he had to talk his way out of it

Per Ric Bucher at BR

quote:

The subject of moving James, however, was contemplated by the Lakers, a team source said, weeks before Van Gundy aired it. When rumors engulfed the team at the February trade deadline that it was willing to trade anyone other than James to acquire All-Star forward Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans, James' agent, Rich Paul, was widely accused of spreading those rumors because Davis is also one of his clients.

Paul denied to B/R that he leaked the Lakers' interest in Davis, but Buss suspected otherwise and was furious. The idea of terminating the franchise's relationship with Paul by moving James at least crossed Buss' mind, the team source said, and Paul was made aware of that. That prompted Paul to reach out to Buss to clear the air, and whatever ill will existed supposedly dissipated. At the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference a few weeks later, Buss blamed the media for making the rumors public.

quote:

One Western Conference GM said he would be interested in trading for James to contend with the defending champion Golden State Warriors, but he wouldn't swap his best player for him because it would defeat the purpose. Translation: James can't single-handedly lead a team to title contention, especially in the Western Conference. He needs a fellow star next to him, along with the right coach and supporting cast. "He's not good enough anymore to take four cadavers and get to the Finals," the GM says. "Not in the West."

GMs are saying they won't get all that much for him

Why don’t they? The Lakers are just as bad as last year, if not worse, with LeBron.

They won't trade him, they think he can still attract another star to play with him.

Resign Randle and Elf and offer our “young core” and a slew of picks. How could they pass it up? It’s a young core!!!

This is the ONLY way I accept AD playing on our team. We trade scraps for LeBoo and contend.

Nobody who isn't literally retarded believe that. How could the media make internal rumors public? Rich Paul could become toxic as an agent.

No idea why Lebron didnt just come to NOLA.

He had shooters and a big to protect him. He didnt even need to be the second option.

If this was truly about championships, but we all know thats is not the case at all.

LeBron's move to L.A. was more about his lifestyle than winning. He wanted to work on his production company, and become a social icon. The basketball is secondary at this point in his life. The Lakers had no choice but to sign him, but it wasn't the best basketball move in the long run.

I told a few people this, hell even Screamin A Smith said the same thing in the offseason. We would have had the rest shot of taking down GS with that trio. But winning and his legacy are no longer his top priority. He's more worried about starting his Hollywood post ball life...

If Lebron and AD were on the Pels next year, that would be the only way I would stop being a NOP fan.

Honestly, most teams would trade for him in a second if actually offered. The GMs probably wouldn't want it but the owners would want the increase in revenue.

I don't understand this argument. He waited 34 years. Couldn't it wait 4 more? He has another 40 years to focus on that when he retires.

This would have been the ultimate in power moves by Buss and I suspect Buss probably threatened LeBron/Paul with taking up the Pels offer.

I've gotten the impression that he answered the GOAT question satisfactorily in his own mind and no longer felt he had anything to prove on the court. Whether he felt he surpassed Jordan or realized he never would only LeBron knows. But what he failed to realize was immediately looking like you can't hack it in the West is the surest way to Tarnish 8 straight Finals appearances from the East.
