Is Coby White a better take than Garland?
I've watched film on both, and actually watched alot of Whites games with UNC this year and I was impressed with his ball skills, quickness and high motor. He shoots the rock pretty well and spread the ball out well also was good on the defensive side. But his speed is where he is a dime, the dude out runs everybody on the court. He has better size as well at 6'5" and weighs about 190 vs 6'2 and 175 ish for Garland. Something to really look into I guess for the home squad, I'm guessing they work both out this week.

I might be in the minority but yes

Garland probably does have more potential as scorer but I feel white is far more sound in the other areas

With what limited viewing time I’ve had on these guys, it just seems to me Garland passes the eye test and White just didn’t do it for me. I can see Garland becoming an nba star. I can see White struggling to make a roster someday.

Garland has a much higher ceiling of a shooter than Coby does which is why he’ll be taken earlier, but Coby could very well be the better player. Elite shooters are just valued higher and even though Garland has a small sample size, he will be picked before Coby.

I dont know if it's good or bad, but Coby White reminds me of a bigger Ty Lawson is his prime... I can see what you are saying, but at the same time, he may develop into the best guard in the league one day, who knows? And I guess that is the gamble you take regardless of who it is.

Yeah I agree. It’s a tough call. I’m just going on my intuition. I feel like I usually get it right but not always that’s for sure.

re: Is Coby White a better take than Garland?
Here’s the thing with Coby White, his size is rather misleading.

He has a 6’4 wingspan, an inch shorter than Garland’s, and has earned a reputation of being a bit slender and needing to add muscle.

I don’t hate White by any stretch, in fact, it’s interesting that despite his ho hum 35% from
three numbers, he actually hit 42% from the NBA line and 38% overall against the tougher part of the schedule.

So there is reason to believe his shooting knocks are a bit misleading and will translate better than suspected based on his traditional college stats.

My take from another thread.

Call me crazy but I like coby white. Vastly improved as a shooter over the year and he’s still developing his shot. He attacks the rim constantly and pushes in transition which could be really intriguing with this young athletic nucleus. Roy Williams called him the best scoring pg he’s ever coached. Smart, high energy player who’s still growing into his game. If he continues to develop at the rate he did last year I think he’s got a very high ceiling.

ETA garland seems to have the higher ceiling as a pure shooter, but I think whites got a higher ceiling as a player.

DeAndre Hunter should be the pick at #4.

Is Coby really 6'5? Or is it due to his hair ?

I can see why people love Garland, being able to pull up from 30 feet is quite a weapon in today’s NBA. Unless you get red flags in the interview you pretty much have to take Garland over White. That being said, I immediately fell in love with the frenetic pace White plays at. I think he’d be a great fit but I don’t take him at 4. He’s one of the guys I consider if someone gives me an offer worth trading back for.

Yeah White is an option if we trade down because someone wants to pay big for Garland

Cause he’s more of a SG. Good enough dribbler & I do like his pacing, but is he athletic enough to get his own shot consistently?

I feel like he’s a future low percentage shooter and prob a bench scorer maybe like a poor mans Jamal Crawford

re: Is Coby White a better take than Garland?
i agree that's a possibility but i'm not sold on Garland. it's like a crawford/lou williams situation

why i prefer just drafting hunter at 4 b/c it gets murky when we trade down. we need to get a serious haul back or only go to 6 (so we get culver or hopefully hunter)

When I thought we were going to get the 7th pick, White was who I wanted.

garland shot 47% on 23 total attempts from 3 and everyone is ready to crown him as an elite shooter.

He can play either guard spot, but lacks experience and savvy in the half court. Makes some poor decisions, but he’s got tools I think you can refine. He’s got some work to do but he really made huge strides as the year progressed. How any of these guys turn out is a guess, I don’t think there is a sure bet after 3, maybe even after 2.

How would you play White or Garland with Jrue and Ball? 3 guard sets?

I'm not sure how anyone could make a definitive judgment on Garland on here considering he played in 5 games in college and I doubt anyone here watched him play in HS.
