This story obviously came from Vaughn.

quote:

This marriage, however, would not have been possible without Brooklyn assistant Jacque Vaughn removing his name from consideration for New Orleans' vacancy. And while the appeal of keeping one's kids in the same location plays a factor in many NBA parents' career planning, league sources told B/R it was Vaughn's negotiations with Griffin that derailed the Nets coach from joining the Pelicans.

In those talks, which included a dinner in Chicago, Griffin previewed the same level of influence he has utilized throughout the executive's tenure in New Orleans, where members of Van Gundy's coaching staff and Alvin Gentry's before his often mentioned Griffin's preferred involvement in areas such as minutes, rotations and skill development, primarily for the players he has drafted since 2019. With Vaughn, sources said, Griffin had specific ideas to fill out the coach's entire assistant group, envisioning Bucks assistant Charles Lee as the associate head coach, plus a starting backcourt of Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Kira Lewis.

Vinson is staying, as we hoped and expected.

quote:

Vinson is expected to remain on Green's coaching staff, sources said, especially after the assistant's interview that was considered exemplary by Pelicans brass and lasted over four hours. Vinson, as well as New Orleans assistant Teresa Weatherspoon, is known to have a strong rapport with both Ingram and Williamson. And that ingredient may be the most important to any recipe that pushes Green's Pelicans into the postseason while solidifying a marriage between franchise and generational superstar.

That definitely seems like it was leaked from Vaughn or his agent.

It's time for the Alaskan Assassin to live up to his name and lead a bloody coup.

I'm probably as big of a Kirastan as there is on this board, but I don't think he's ready to start unless he really bulks up this summer. I'd see his development arc like Jaxson's. Ready for full time backup duties this year and if he's starting caliber, ready to start in year 3.

I don't get the part about starting NAW and Kira at all. That simply doesn't make sense, and it doesn't jive with the reports that we are going after Simmons, Lowry, Sexton, etc.

I just don't think that conversation is being reported accurately.

I hope they are still high on bringing Lee in as associate head coach...Grabbing Green, Lee and Mitchel would be a dream offseason.

I see it as saying Bledsoe and most likely Lonzo will be gone.

I don’t like the part mentioning that Zion was supposed to be at the PHX playoff game with BI and Vinson, but cancelled/declined to go.

In one lame arse article:

1. show Willie Green that he was NOT first choice
2. show any and all coach candidates that Griffin will micromanage them now and in the future
3. Show everyone that we're about to virtue signal with our assistant coaching staff -- i.e. Witherspoon
4. Show Lonzo he's not wanted
5. Show Zion that we're OK with trotting out a damn-near all rookie + Ingram starting lineup

In interviews with each candidate, the Pelicans asked for each coach's 30-, 60- and 90-day plans from receiving an offer, how to scheme an optimal offense around Williamson and Ingram, and wanted each person to lay out development plans for the team's hoard of former first-round picks, including Jaxson Hayes, a personal favorite of Griffin's, sources said.

That's good, at least.

The Zion canceling bit wasn't my favorite part.

That should throw some cold water on all of the "move Ingram for Lillard" talk... same with Hayes being part of a blockbuster

The vaughn stuff after what's quoted in the OP makes it patently obvious it was either him or his agent that leaked it. He will be one of the best candidates out there next year! For real guys!

I think most GMs/POBOs with young teams will want a lot of input with the coaching staff and playing young players. I feel a lot of this is unfair to Griffin and I am not currently a huge fan.

The Kira/NAW blurb is interesting, but I also don't believe it based on what we have seen so far.

I think that Hayes is a future All-Star. I can't wait to see his improved handle and shooting this fall.

But the Zion part doesn't bother me. He was going to go, and then something came up. That's a lot different from him saying, "I don't want to go."

Yeah, its really supposed to be shitting on Griffin a bit but I don't really feel like Griffin is doing anything wrong in this specific context.

He wants his young players he drafted to play. He wants a HC and coaches that match his vision. He is the President of the team. He should want that.

Now, how he is going about achieving his vision, and what his vision is and if it is correct or not is a whole different argument.

Ehh.

I'm sure they want input but we now have two coaches and one candidate who withdrew from consideration heavily implying that griffin is too involved in the coaching decisions.

The pelicans source in the article said griffin wants to give his input on basically every decision.

Griff talks a big game with his "We're a family" bullshite, but he clearly doesn't trust the people he's hiring to do their jobs properly. For a ton of different reasons that's a recipe for disaster.

Maybe it was more like “based on who’s currently on the roster (RFAs don’t count) who would you start at guard right now? If you answer Bledsoe, I’m not hiring you.”

I don't think it's a stretch. You don't draft guys to sit on the bench and rot. Griffin wants to develop his core but the coaches in place for the last 2 season didn't want to develop the young players.

What Griffin wants is what we been crying for the past 2 years. It is consistent with what SVG said about Griffin wanting to play and develop youth at the expense of winning games.

This should have been the play from the start with both Gentry and SVG. But they didn't want to organically develop those young players and instead opted for the win now lineups.

Which leads to a bigger problem: Hiring Stan Van Gundy.

In every article about the potential hire, and in MANY discussions on here, it was well, well known and pointed out repeatedly that the biggest negative for SVG was that he does not want to develop young players. He hates it, and he does not believe in young players playing in games. He thinks you earn it in practice, and if you don't, you don't play.

If that was known to us, then it had to have been known to Griffin. And that is so far out of his "vision"...

Why did he hire SVG? It makes no sense at all.

Probably because he talked like he was going to play and develop the young guys but at the end of the day, his stubbornness led to his downfall like it has everywhere he's been.
