Shamit and Mason discuss the draft from a Pels perspective with Sam Vecenie. Lots of good discussion of players in our 8 pick range.
LINK /

Vecenie likes Mathurin a lot, has him 6th on his board, but thinks Sochan is a better guy to take for the Pels with our history of fixing shots.

I'll have to give this a listen, like Vecenie a lot.

I know on his pod following the lottery he did a mock with Matt Pennie and he had us selecting AJ Griffin stricly because of his shooting after Mathurin was off the board, with Sochan on the board. So he's changed his opinion in the last few days.

How does Sochan compare to Herb? On the surface he seems kind of redundant.

I think in terms of redundancy, lets say we had Dillon Brooks on the roster instead of Herb. Brooks is a good defender, but lets kind of exaggerate his limitations a bit to fit the example, he's 6'6 with a 6'6 wingspan and doesn't move well enough laterally to consistently switch onto speedy guards. Now we're looking at Johnny Davis in the draft, another good defender, but has the same limitations. I feel those two guys, at least defensively, are slightly redundant.

With Herb and Sochan though, both offer great size, are very long, and move laterally very well. They can both guard 4, even 5 positions in the case of Sochan, who's a bit bigger. I guess the easiest way to answer it is, wouldn't you gladly take another Herb? I brought it up the other day, but the teams still in the playoffs all have 6-8 high level switchable defenders. We have 3, maybe 4? We have to, and will, add a few more of those guys along the way.

But Herb and Sochan project as All-NBA type defenders, could you imagine having both those guys?

Offensively is where it gets a little more difficult, but both guys are instinctive and skilled, and I would say both project to be at least average shooters so they don't kill you there either. If you're talking about two guys who gave you nothing offensively, I think there's a good discussion to be had, but I don't think Sochan is redundant at all with how skilled he is. I'm not saying you have to pick him, but I think you have to add another guy similar to him, at some point.

If we end up moving Jaxson at some point, I would really like Sochan. There is so much potential and defensive flexibility there. Plus, I don’t think we need to worry about him coming in and being that scorer off the bench immediately as a rookie(which we need).

Mathurin and Griffin could potentially be that player, but I would try and find someone to take Jax and use our MLE on a proven veteran that can score. Either that or find a way to trade for Someone like Jordan Clarkson.

The Jazz might be looking to blow things up, and they are looking to get under the tax. We would just need to convince Temple to retire to keep us from the tax lol.

Another thing you have to consider, and this is putting the cart way before the horse...

But let's just say that you pick Sochan, and he becomes a defender on the level of Herb.

Well, Herb, by being a 2nd round pick, we have less control over his future and ability to hold on to him than we would a 1st round pick. Just saying.

They started off by talking about moving up to 3 or 4. I really liked the idea of getting one of the top 4 guys. We don't have a ton of needs or roster spots. Getting the best talent, makes a lot of sense..

He literally said “I fricked up in the mock. I wouldn’t take Griffin for them”

Herb will still be a RFA when his contract is up, so we will still have the same opportunity to match contracts and keep him as we would any 1st round pick.

Yes, but I think what he is saying is that we don’t have team options on him going as far out as on a first, meaning Herb is due for a major raise in about two seasons.

At that point we either pay the man or we ship him out. I’d rather keep him but someone may go full retard in making him an offer.

They are similar defensively, but Sochan can guard the 5. Having 2 guys that can put out all defensive performances isn't a bad thing

If both are just passable offensively, having them out there locking down the likes of Steph and Klay or Edwards and KAT makes them worth a lot as long as the other three guys can score.

And that shouldn’t be an issue with CJ, BI, and Zion.
