How far would you go to keep Julius Randle next season?

Lets say the the Celtics trade is agreed to on draft night. The Pelicans & co. know that Smart, Tatum, & 3 picks are coming to New Orleans before FA starts.
Randle exercises his option and the only big we have coming back is Jah
1: do you want him back?
2: if yes, how much would you pay to resign him?
3: if no, who is your PF next season, assuming Zion is off the table?

Yes. Would consider up to an average of 12 mil. Deal depends on what the return is on Davis.

Good question!
If I get that deal from the Celtics, I would only want Randle back as a 6th man bench scorer. I don't want his high usage on the court with Jrue and Tatum. Not to mention that would mean have 2 average shooting and 2 below average shooting guys at the 1-4. Not great.
So, I would pay a 22-26 mpg high usage, good scoring guy 10-12 mil per year for 2-3 years. I don't think I can go any higher. Hopefully he really does like New Orleans and would stay for that and be happy in that role but I would bet he thinks he is a starter and worth more money than that so I doubt we would keep him

Most teams have had the 'big problem' for a while as traditional bigs are getting phased out. While we have had the luxury of having AD that can play/defend multiple positions.
Question is now what direction do we go in? While I'm not a huge fan of Randle's game, I think his size & athleticism give him the ability to be super versatile to guard any lineup that is out on the court.
I lean towards keeping him and I'd go up to 3yr/$45 mil. Idk what our cap situation is but I think that is nearing the top of it.

Ideally, I agree. Randle is better off the bench and I'd like to pay him in the 10-12 range. Unfortunately, I think thats unrealistic.
Randle has obvious deficiencies and it could be a disaster on the court with Smart, Holiday, & Tatum.

Randle would start for a handful of teams, so he is a starter and should get in the 15-18M a year type deal. He'll want guaranteed years, so something like 4y/60ish million. This past contract is supposed to be a prove it contract and he has surpassed it. I don't know if I would pay him. The PF position is probably the easiest in the league to fill and the draft is loaded with them. I would look elsewhere first and match if I had no other options..

So we have 4 1st rounders and the only one that can crack the rotation is Naz Reid? Would we be taking him in the top 10?

I am guessing that we couldn't find a decent deal for Randle at the deadline.
If this I a sign that the market is low on Randle, we may have a chance at keeping him at a discount. I wouldn't pay more than 15 million, but even at that price, I think that could still be a good value.

I see a lot of people here don’t think much of Randle’s game and I’m not sure why. He’s not AD but who is? I would be extremely happy with him as our starting PF or even start him at C if you want to play small ball. He has had some huge games for us this year and he’s a proven 20 & 10 per game guy. I say sign him so you leave Jrue with another proven player in the rebuild.

As good as Randle is on the offensive side of the ball, he is equally bad on the defensive end... His ideal role is as a 6th man, hopefully he sees that and signs for the ideal 6th man money

You also need to add a rim protector to any lineup with Randle which likely means more below average perimeter shooting than avg/avg+ on the floor.

I believe the CBA restricts what the Pels can offer. He is a goner!

That starting 5 for spacing would be terrible.
Only Tatum can shoot 3's consistanly.
Give me Mirotic instead for that money Randle is going to get.
Mirotic plays defence.
Smart
Holiday
Tatum
Mirotic
Okafor

I think Mirotic works really really well with Smart, Jrue, & Tatum too. Id much prefer him over Randle if we are comparing the 2.
I guess I ask the question because I've been curious about what our future front court looks like in terms of style. For example, Randle would be great to keep if decide to go with the GSW model where Randle is our Draymond and we surround him with shooters.
We havent had to deal with this issue because AD is the perfect front court player in today's NBA. And we saw how much of an advantage it was against Portland because AD & Niko made Nurkic unplayable.

Randle is a starting forward with offense and energy. You can do great things with him and a dependable defensive presence at center. Imo, a team has to have damn strong starting five and a contender to bring Randle off the bench.

Randle and a defensive center means 2/5 of your lineup are poor perimeter shooters. Add Jrue to that lineup, that’s 3/5 being poor shooters. Randle is better coming off the bench with shooters around him.

Or not on the Pelicans at all.
I'm betting that Hill and Moore will be on the team next season as I don't see them being dumped for picks.
So I think it's reasonable to assume free agents like Mirotic, Payton, Justin Holiday and Favours are gettable.
With the AD trade to Boston:
Smart/Payton
Holiday/Moore/Jackson
Tatum/Holiday/Hill
Mirotic/Williams/Diallo
Favours/Okafor
Is a decent enough team to build with.
