How active can they really be? After signing Gordon (12-14 million per), they will have 9 players signed for next year at about 50 million total. The salary cap is scheduled to be about 61 million with a luxury tax thresehold close to 70 million. Giving the Hornets 10-20 million to spend on 4 players. They have two lottery picks, so they will be about 6 million a year and I expect them to resign Belli for the minimum (about 2.5). That leaves about 2-3 to the cap or they could go over. But they have 5 guys coming up for new contracts after next year. So they probably need to save some room, especially with a young team.

Of course this all changes if they amnesty Okafor or Ariza. I don't know how the amnesty works with Ariza's option (does he still get it?). It also changes on what they are able to draft. If they get Drummond, I don't think there is any way they re-sign Kaman. I just don't think they are going to be that active in FA, unfortunately..

I have no idea what their plans are. I do know Demps has said they WILL have cap space after signing the draft choices. I'm going to go out on a limb and say they've been thinking about this and have a plan.

I'm think either Okafor or Ariza will get amnestied, and the Hornets try to bring in one solid FA

Its not a great FA class anyway. I was just suprised by the lack of movement the team will have. I don't like the idea of Amnesting either one. It's a huge waste of money. There has to be a team dump enough to take one of them on.

I dont know what list you're seeing, this is an extremely deep year for FA's, especially "young veterans" like Demps and the Org. Want.

I think the players that we have a realistic shot at getting at positions of need is going to be pretty weak. Bynum and Hibbert aren't going to happen, then a pretty big drop off to players that won't be better than Okafor.

At the 4, you've got the ancient Duncan and KG, then no one really any better than Landry.

At the 3, an aging Wallace that wouldn't really fit with our young, rebuilding team, then Batum who will cost a good bit. After them, a whole lot of meh.

Mcgee has looked very good for the Nuggets, especially in game 3

I wonder what our FA options will look like after we win the top pick in the lottery.

Wouldn't be suprised if Monty works the heck out of Aminu, and we trade Ariza for a salary dump. I also wouldn't be suprised if Okafor is amnestied. Should both of these things come to be, then we will have a TON of cap space.

Why do you care? I doubt you'll be fronting the money to Mr. Benson.

Both Ariza and Okafor have 2 years remaining. If amnesty is used, it will be this summer. Ariza is making $7.2M next year and $7.7M in the final year. That's not that bad for a starter. We gave $9M to Carl Landry this year.... I don't think we need to move Ariza, but amnestying him would be idiotic. At that pricetag, he still has value.

As for Okafor, he just hasn't earned his contract at all since it was signed. If there are targets in free agency, you amnesty him. However, I assume you would have to use it early to prevent cap holds. Not really sure how that works.

Your numbers are jacked up anyway:

Hornets Payrolls

Giving Gordon $14M would give you 9 players at $45M. That leaves about $16 between 3 or 4 positions. If you amnesty Okafor, that gives you about $30M before you even hit the cap, and another $9M before the luxury tax threshold. We're in pretty solid shape.

I think it's supposed to be frozen at $58 for 2 years then calculated on the new terms of the CBA and expected to possibly go down depending on league revenue. So the cap space picture is even worse than you were stating. Ken Berger calculates only $6.3 million in cap space.

quote:

Hornets, $15.3 million: This is another cap-room mirage, as New Orleans intends to sign restricted free agent Eric Gordon, whose cap hold lowers the Hornets' room to $6.3 million.

He's calculating a $14 million cap hold for Gordon, so if no one makes an offer to him it's possible we could low ball him and get a few million back in cap space. Either way, there isn't much room for making moves unless we dump/amnesty Ariza or Okafor.

If Demps can't find a diamond in the rough starter upgrade for the cap space we have, I'd rather front load Gordon's deal, give him a $6 million signing bonus and save $2 million per year in cap space going forward.
