Hire Coach Before or After Draft?

An interesting debate:

In all likelihood, the AD trade will be agreed to in mid June. Draft is June 20th. Here's the question:

Do you make those trades/picks and then hire a coach that fits the new rosters strengths or do you hire a coach first and then make a trade/draft players that fits the coaches style?

Curious to hear your thoughts

He should hire David Blatt immediately.

I make the best hire I can as soon as possible and the I draft the best players I can. If the styles don’t match I dump the coach after a season.

Coaches are a dime a dozen in the nba. Great players aren’t and the nba draft is a total crapshoot.

Indications are that Gentry is sticking around.

Whether that is as coach or in another position is a different discussion.

Griffin apparently likes Gentry and nearly hired him in Cleveland before choosing David Blatt instead.

Or maybe you keep Gentry and staff on for a year, and the job is more appealing next season with Solo and Moore off the books, a bunch of cap space and guys on rookie deals.

Sometime between the draft and lottery. Definitely after the AD trade is agreed upon.

If Griffin and the GM already have an idea on the type of roster they want to build and what style of basketball it is they want to play I see no reason not to wait until after the draft unless you already have a guy who's far and away your #1 option and you think he's going to get hired before then.

But other than that I see no harm in waiting. It's not like you're trying to attract marque free agents and need to hire a guy so they know who they'll be playing for.

But doesn't that risk Gentry becoming too hard to dismiss? He's already well liked in the Benson organization apparently. Let's say he exceeds expectations next year and wants to keep coaching. Gonna be hard to cut ties then, even if you think he's limited in how far he can take the team.

I think you go coach first because you want players, staff, and management to meld together. Management part is the first domino, then coaching, then the players to match that style of play.

One thing that's always going to be a given is that a divorce with Gentry is gonna be hard no matter when it happens. Everybody loves the guy. No matter what I might think of him as a coach, nobody ever likes seeing him leave. I think if we can find a way to transition him into some sort of advisory position it would be a huge win for everyone involved. I don't hate the idea of having him on for one more year until we get a clearer idea of our roster construction before hiring the next coach (maybe promoting Finch?)

One thing is for sure--our last two hires have been trying to retrofit rosters to incongruent coaching styles. For once I'd like to see a coach brought in with a style that matches the personnel on day 1.

I just think it is asking A LOT of Griffin to evaluate all FO staff, coaching staff, pull off the AD trade and scout/draft in the next two months. If I had to rank those things in terms of importance and urgency, I would:

1. Get my staff in the front office, analytics, scouting, etc in place
2. Figure out AD trade
3. Figure out this draft

4. Get my coaching staff in place

Honestly, only 3-4 coaches in the entire league make that big of a difference. I would be fine if Alvin and his crew stuck around for a while. But even if I did let them go, I would figure out all those other things before worrying about that.

Good point but that was Tom not Gayle as owner in charge.

Talent over everything. Draft the most talented guys who fit your roster and then get a coach that fits.

honestly don't care either way I just want players who fit the coaches style who ever it is and I guess that falls on the gm.

That all makes sense. Wouldn't the Gentry in front office role concept help with all of the transition issues? Then name a coach in July or August.

I’d hire the coach first. I want everything in place for whenever the new players get here. This way any concerns they may have can be answered by a unified front.
