I remember when people were calling for his head. One playoff run and everybody’s licking his butthole

I said this earlier. I don't think he's a great coach, but he has a good system and if you give him players that fit that system he'll put out a good team.
AD and Mirotic are the types of bigs that can maximize Gentry's system. I hope they don't attempt to put another plodding big next to AD, if Cousins leaves.

I'm glad we only had to give him two years instead of 3.

Not a fan of the extension. But whatever

No coach has ever won with players that didnt fit his system, though. That's been my main defense of gentry. up until this past season he had injured rosters and personnel not conducive to his offense. Demps' roster construction was the bigger issue
This is a players league, the coach is just the easiest scapegoat

Deserved imo

Not only that, but when the Pels are playing the way Gentry and Finch want to play on offense, it is highly entertaining basketball.

It sounds like it is really only a one year extension with a team option. He already had his option picked up for the upcoming season, so they gave hima raise this year, tacked on a guaranteed year for 2019-2020, and a partially guaranteed or team option year for 2020-2021.
This does not sound like an extension they cannot walk away from if it becomes clear Gentry is a limiting factor in the next 2 years during which there will be the Warriors roadblock anyhow.

this was always coming. it's just how things are done. a good organization does not allow Gentry to coach this year w/o more security.
the Pels did well to make 20/21 non-guaranteed or something like it. if it falls apart this year or Davis decides he wants out, it's a small hit.

It's true, but he also does stupid shite at times. That's true for most any coach though.

I agree with this, but AD has to take some of the blame too. AD pushing the idea that he won't play center is the cause of a lot of the Pelicans issues these past years. If he was okay with playing center the Pels would have never wasted money on Asik, and possibly not on Ajinca either. That money could have been spent on filling the gap at wing.

AD just never wanted to guard true centers and still doesn't. And we never should have wanted him to do so. That didn't mean Demps needed to pay Asik/Anjica big money. Demps completely missed on the smallball/pace & space trend while simultaneously hiring Gentry to implement exactly that. It was baffling. AD has always needed/wanted another front court player who can bang low against big centers and rebound on defense, but that player should also be able to space on offense.
He essentially wants/needs a 3&D frontcourt mate. Demps learned his lesson and got Niko who can do just that. The smallball trend has helped in this because there are fewer and fewer true oafs on the court, so someone like Niko can guard the 5 nightly and not get worn down by physical play.

He earned it after this postseason run....I had my doubts earlier in the season though.

That's the thing. There aren't many huge centers that were going to be an issue for AD.
I agree that Mirotic is basically the perfect counterpart to AD, as he isn't afraid of contact in the post and can stretch the ball on O. He's basically what everyone wished Ryno could be.
re: Gentry agrees to contract extensionPosted by Parrish on 6/7/18 at 11:13 am to Epic Cajun
One benefit of a bigger body next to AD is that it takes some wear and tear off AD who isn't bumping bodies as often on both ends of the court. The "center" position for the Pelicans may have been drawn up as a mercenary for matchup purposes, but Boogie falling into the Pels lap meant an elite player who didn't shy from getting physical.
I'm not a Gentry fan but this raise is appropriate. Gentry gets a reward for the team's success and the Pels maintain reasonable control if the team does not improve. Both sides should be happy.

Bad move. They should’ve let this season play out and make sure this year want a fluke.
re: Gentry agrees to contract extensionPosted by ErikGordan on 6/7/18 at 11:29 am to Lester Earl
Unfortunately Dell will be extended.
Good coaches adjust to players talents. There is no way this team competes with Golden State using Alvin's system. It was on Gentry to adjust to the bigs. It's easier to replace Al than those two bigs.
