Not Pels, but this could set the stage/pricing for more RSNs going direct to consumer.

The local cable network that airs Boston’s Major League Baseball and National Hockey League games is launching a standalone streaming subscription, marking a first for regional sports networks.

Starting Wednesday, NESN will charge $29.99 a month for streaming access to its network’s programming, which includes live Red Sox and Boston Bruins games. The first month will cost $1 as a promotional price. An annual subscription costs $329.99 and comes with eight tickets to any Red Sox game in 2022.

The service, NESN 360, will only be available to people in the New England area. MLB owns out-of-market streaming rights for its MLB TV, a streaming service that’s available nationally.

This doesnt do anything for out-of-market folks though.

This is where the problem is.

The problem with the pelicans has always been local in market streaming options.

There is none that are legal.

At least if you are out of market you could get league pass.

There is a blackout on League Pass when games are on TNT/ESPN, but out of market folks can buy League Pass to get the non national games.

Well guess what happens when Zion comes back

So yeah while noted the local market has significant issues, as the team becomes more popular, out of market will have some as well.

Folks have a lot more money in the NE. Plus they get two sports, one of which is 162 Red Sox games.

Robery if the Pels streaming service is in the same arena as this one.

Everything is going D2C eventually. Right now broadcasters are more afraid of losing cable money than losing future subscribers to piracy or fans just not caring about a sport they can't watch. The more D2C options that succeed the sooner others will jump into it.

Looks like I'll be continuing to use the VPN + League Pass solution for the time being still when traveling.

I just want a simple solution, pay X price and get all your team's games, regardless of proximity to the home city.

It really shouldn't be this hard.

Tons of money im sure just left on the table or being lost to pirating just because businesses and networks are tethered to their old revenue models.

Consumers should be able to buy games or packages like tickets and be able to sell or transfer them with a small fee. Eventually an alternative to cable will takeover though considering the declining trajectory of overall household subscriptions.

VPN with location set to India when signing up for league pass and using it = $20 for the entire season.

I agreee with Henderson Hands. Why again am I paying $30 a month for this? That’s more than nexflix and Hulu combined to watch a couple games a week for half the year. I’ll continue to stream for free until these idiots come up with a reasonable solution

It’s important for people to understand — existing contractual language with pay TV providers prevents NESN from charging a low price for this product. It’s not like executives picked $30 a month out of the blue.

I think $30 is too much also, but a standalone sports streaming option gets me the content I want at a lower price than a $65+ bundle full of channels I don't need like YoutubeTV or HuluLive.
