I really am in favor of going with shooting for the stars in most drafts. Yeah, you will get some busts, but if you get one or two booms you are set.

Once teams have a star or two, like we do, they almost always tend to play it safe in the subsequent drafts and pick guys with really high floors and really low ceilings, guys they think can be 7th men and stick around. I can totally understand this strategy, but I don't love it. I say go for it.

I'm sure I'll get a lot of "Poku" answers here, but who are your guys that are boom or bust, in other words will either develop into a star or will be out of the league in 5 years, no in between.

I'll go with Precious Achiuwa in this category for purposes of being different.

Absolutely insane athlete, great size/frame and wingspan, quick as hell for his size, with extremely high defensive potential. He does not appear to have the highest basketball IQ on earth, is not a reliable shooter yet, and outside of dunks doesn't finish around the rim as well as he should.

But if he hits...he could be a guy that could play 3-5, give you great defense and athleticism, and honestly be a star. If he hits.

McDaniels. But I don’t think Griff would allow a guy who has attitude issues on the team.

I know people are probably tired of hearing me beat this drum, but Cole Anthony. If you just look at his skillset, he has the skills to be a star in the league. Ball handling, getting to the rim, shooting (both off the dribble and pull up), he also has decent size for a guard (6-3 190 lbs) and is a willing defender.

The primary knock on him is his shot selection (which is also the main knock on LaMelo), and that he gets tunnel vision at times and focuses more on scoring than facilitating. IMO, both of those could be attributed to playing on a team that wasn't very good.

Is he going to work out in the NBA? Who knows, but he's one of the players in this draft that absolutely has the skills and potential to be a superstar. And IMO, those are the types of players that we should focus on drafting.

That's funny, because I feel about Anthony the way most around here feel about Ball. My own personal melt would be fairly epic.

The difference between the two to me is that Ball has shown promise of being an elite passer. So, if both of them improve their shot selection, Ball has other traits that translate. I view Anthony as providing zero value to the team other than taking shots away from Zion or BI.

At 24, your boom or busts guy are going to almost always be a bust, and even when they are a boom, it's such a small chance. There's been 3 all stars taken in the last 10 years in the 20's.

last years guys in the 20's that were decent were Thybulle, Clarke and Williams, and all played on good teams, and all were upper classman.

In 2018, it's Okogie and Shamet, both sophomores, and maybe you can add Grayson Allen, Simons and Holiday to that, 2 upper classman there.

in 2017, Jarret Allen, OG, Kuzma, Hart, Derrick White, 3 upper classman, a soph and a fresh. Nice list here, actual starter quality players.

in 2016, LeVert, Siakam, Dejonte Murray, Senior/Soph/Fresh Nice list again, but you can see the trend here, that it takes them a year or two to get going.

The list goes on, but more than likely, all you're going to find is a quality backup in this range in the draft, and more often than not, just like in the 2nd round, you're going to find more upper classman that will stick around in the NBA in this range. I listed 17 guys in 4 years drafted that have had some type of impact on their teams that was at a minimum as a good backup, and only 4 of them were freshman. there's usually about 4 freshman taken in that range each year, and only 1 ends up sticking around on average. The Sophomores seem to be the most successful.

The odds of finding sure fire starters in this range is extremely low. when i say sure fire starter, i mean someone that would start on any team. Josh Hart is a good player to have, but he's not a sure fire starter. There's literally a handful of guys in the last 10 drafts that fit that category drafted in the 20's. 100 guys, and only a handful are starters, and maybe 20 more are quality players that will stay in the league and play 20+ mpg.

McDaniels is the correct answer.

Just don't think he will fit on this team as far as culture or attitude
