EJ Liddell Post Draft Interview

It’s really hard not to like and be excited about this guy. He’s going to have a massive chip on his shoulder and work extremely hard. It’s readily apparent that he’s a pretty sharp kid as well. He’s going to fit right in with our organization on and off the court.

That's tough to watch he almost cries like 5x in the first minute

Yeah, he definitely still had a lot of emotions running through him. Just getting drafted, being around friends and family, and also inexplicably dropping from the 20’s to the 40’s.
But he was able to compose himself and say some things that excite me about his mentality and overall intelligence.

There's a ton of background noise, but the closed captioning on that is horrible.

Lol that’s awful. Baron has been quiet for a minute. Maybe he has stopped Googling DD’s mom and has now moved onto editing the CC on our draft prospect interviews.

Seems like a good kid. He is definitely highly disappointed. I hope he balls out carves out a role.

Geez seems like a high character guy. I’m not even a big NBA guy at all but it’s hard not to love this team.

is he just a case of the draftniks and FOs just having entirely different views on? I get people say he dropped because he’s an undersized big but that’s not something everyone suddenly realized last night

Once you get past like 10 or so in a normal draft it gets real weird and increases as the draft goes on. NBA draftniks aren't nearly as good as NFL ones b/c the industry isn't as big and the NBA draft is a lot more complicated (see: Duren).
In the 20s and onward it's very random in terms of pre-draft projection, and the themes change every year. Way back in the day it was all euros to be stashed. Last night seemed to be more projects with starter potential.
Liddell is a role/bench guy with limited upside/ceiling.

EJ has a 36 inch standing vertical at 250 pounds and is just a really good overall player with no discernible weaknesses other than being 6ft 7in.
I think he has a higher ceiling than teams give him credit for.
The nba does this every year. They overthink the draft process, underrate guys who can already play, overrate guys that can’t, and 8 guys who should’ve gone top 25, either go in the 2nd round or go undrafted.

That's kind of a big deal for a center, even in this era of the NBA. There is one Draymond Green.
I think Lidell can make our team (possibly even cause us to buy out a guy like Marshall if necessary) but don't overrate his likely output. It's not fair to him.
He projects as a likely role/bench player and that if that happens, it's great for a mid-2nd rounder

I think it’s good value but brether, take a step back

The nba is almost always right when it comes to 2nd rd picks
As much as people think Liddell Is different, the odds say he will never be anything.

Odds are low but occasionally you get someone who succeeded before and the next guy may be similar to them.
There’s an undersized power forward out of the Big Ten some years back who got drafted early in the 2nd. Ended up with a massive chip on his shoulder. Just won yet another ring last week.
Is EJ the next Draymond Green? Not necessarily. But I’m seeing at least some surface similarities in that both played in the Big Ten, were very good defensively, were considered undersized for pros at their position, and who dropped as a result.

To me, he seems like a more athletic and skilled version of Grant Williams and Grant Williams was a rotation player on a Finals team.
Now, he did play like garbage in the finals, but he did provide solid value and minutes to the Celtics before that series.
And EJ is bigger, more athletic and more skilled than Grant in my humble opinion.
I’m not suggesting that he is going to be able guard Jokic or Embiid or average 20 a game in the nba or anything. But it does feel like he could be quality top 8-9 rotation player on most teams.

How good is he with his on ball defense? All of the OSU kids have bad defensive win shares, but he averaged almost 3 blocks per game, so it seems hard to think he’s a liability there.

Yea just watched that. I like what we are doing. Dude is another high character guy who will work his arse off to prove people wrong. Feels like a Herb Jones type of guy.

He will pass Naji Marshell on the rotation.

Lol. The MVP last year was a 2nd rounder. Kinda of a big miss wouldnt you say? Then look at Herb last year.
