Does Winning Zion Change the Coaching Situation?

Now that we know we are getting our future superstar this summer, does that make keeping Gentry for just one more year before making a decision on coaching a bad idea? Zion seems smart and mature, so I'm sure he'll handle a coaching change after his rookie year fine, but it seems less than ideal.

What if his coach moves up the FO and continued to mentor him after coaching him for a year or two? Would that be a tough transition?

I've got no problem with Gentry as a mentor, players seem to like playing for him, I'm thinking more along the lines of do we want much of a scheme/philosophy change in Season 2 of the Zion era? Maybe Griffin's short list of coaches won't bring in a drastic change, but if they would maybe they should try and get that move out of the way and go ahead and promote Uncle Al now.

And settle for a non ideal coach?
Every superstar in history had a coaching change early in his career. The priority is to nail it, not to avoid it. What if Bulls would have rushed it with MJ and not got Phil. Warriors rush it and don't get Kerr. I can go on and on
Also I think you think a coaches job is X and it's actually Y
Systems and Xs and Os is such a small part of the job. And in this era, every coach is gonna basically have the same system - "we wanna run and we wanna space"
If coaching was about systems and spacing, Monty Williams wouldn't have been the hottest name on the market this year

You can see that dynamic in timeouts. Usually its Erman or Finch with the clipboard and Al is rallying the troops.
I remember realizing it didn't take x's and o's to be a head coach when they'd go in Byron Scott's huddles.
Alvin gets those players to play hard for him and I like the way I've heard (Amin El Hassan) talk about fearless Alvin being a great coach and perfect for developing guys by encouraging them to be assertive.
ETA: He was responsible for letting Dragic develop under Nash and had him at like 20/7 when he left by telling him he'd pull him if he saw him being hesitant.

Al is staying. And, honestly, he deserves another year. I also think it would be good for Zion's first year in the league to be with an older, more established coach. If things don't pan out then maybe you make a bolder move towards a younger guy with potential... although Stackhouse recently signed a six-year deal to coach Vanderbilt.

Big If, but if you could convince AD to opt in for one more year and if you can get a Tobias Harris type wing and if you can get a Rondo type PG, Zion-AD-Jrue is basically the perfect combo of players for a Gentry system.

I'm not sure how many coaches are better suited for Zion than Gentry.

There isn’t a solution in sight to the coaching situation until we have a decision on AD. And punting for a year means Gentry stays by default.

I don't get this Harris-Zion-AD front court thing at all. Would not be even close to the type of forward I would want to put next to those 2

Agreed, give me a 3 and D wing, rather than a ball dominant scorer. Someone like Danny Green.
