Did Griff set Lakers up by not taking Kuzma
You’re telling me that the Lakers wanted to keep Kuzma over signing a Kawhi or Kyrie? Good work Griff!

He definitely played Rob like a fiddle

Griff is already the GOAT Pels front office guy

Glad we are on a short month. Can't wait for the 6th to get here so that it is official.

I guess AD is their 5 w/ the lineup of Kuzma. i always thought Kuzma and AD were a bit redundant.

Griffin very well could have realized that pelinka was oblivious to the whole cap space and trade date situation, so he took full advantage. I would not be shocked to learn that he let kuzma stay and went for more draft picks/pick enhancers knowing that he will screw them out of cap space without pelinka realizing it. Griffin is diabolical.

Kuzma's cap hit is pretty minimal though

I think Pelinka played himself to a degree.

They see Kuzma as a starter on a team friendly deal, which is something they need if they are blowing all their cap space on LeBron, AD, and another star.

Problem is that the supposed CBA genius didn’t account for AD taking his trade kicker bonus and that the trade happening on the 6th keeps them from blowing their cap space THEN making the trade.

That’s what makes it so sneaky. It’s small and looks good on paper. But it’s enough to prevent LA from signing another max

Yeah, this isn't about Griff doing something brilliant so much as Pelinka being an idiot.

Even the fact that Pelinka is now shopping for 2nd-round picks is silly. Pelinka could easily have negotiated the trade for one of our picks this year in exchange for one of their next year or something. He was so desperate to get AD that he missed many, many opportunities to maximize the value of the trade.

He could easily trade Kuzma and get an asset in return if he wanted to.

I love Griff but I mean it's a pretty low bar when you're competing against Bob Bass, the Walrus, and Dell Demps

Sure he could but remember the AD deal hasn’t technically happened yet. Lakers have to wait until it goes through and free agency starts on July 1st.

Yeah, that’s damning him by faint praise.

Griff:Pels :: Jim Finks:Saints

Finks was a HOF GM who took the Saints from being a halfassed organization into being a winner. He didn’t get us to the promised land but he changed us from the retarded stepchild of the league into a major player.

I don't think he "set the Lakers up", but I do think that he knew the Lakers didn't want to trade Kuzma (for on and off court reasons) and used that leverage to extract future picks from them.

If the Lakers really need/want to, they could easily trade Kuzma for an asset before July 6th.

Lakers wanted to keep Kuzma because he’s one of the best bang for your buck contracts in the nba. I’m sure Griff also wanted him in the trade for that reason but apparently the Lakers showed how much they wanted him.

re: Did Griff set Lakers up by not taking Kuzma
Griff pumped up Kuzma so that he could get the draft picks...no question in my mind.

If I am the Pels, I do absolutely nothing to help them, as their suffering is our gain.
