Lets say Wolves offer Finch the job but he really loves it here and he wants the chance to work with Zion. He comes to you and says, "I will turn it down and become the coach in waiting. In a year or two, Al moves upstairs and I take over."

Gentry is on board with the idea. What do you say?

Yes.

Continuity will be great for the franchise and Chris Finch is ideal for this.

It’s a cop-out answer, but even though unlike many I have skepticism toward Griffin’s elite GM reputation, if Griffin and Gentry are ok with it I’d be ok as well.

The guy can craft the hell out of an offense, the question I’ve always had is can he run a team? I always got a more Ron Adams career vibe but I obviously do not see how he does or does not conduct himself when the cameras aren’t on game day. Those guys do. If they see surefire coaching prospect then I’d say I’m in.

Um. Yes. Without even thinking.

It’s not like we can’t change our mind later on down the road but...yeah.

Is this a hypo or something being possibly discussed?

Part of me wants to say yes, but I also feel like with Zion and AD on the roster there will be very few coaches who won't want this year the next time it comes open. As good as Finch is, is he the best possible candidate we could snag if the job was open?

No. It's bad process, unless they've already done their homework on coaching options and are really in love with Finch. With all that has been happening, I find that hard to believe.

Most Pels fan like Finch, but most, myself included, don't really know much about him other than "the offense." Not sure why that is worth signing up for blind.

From what I have read, Finch seems like a good coach. But if the whole point of this summer was turning the Pels into a 1st rate basketball franchise, offering 1st time head coach a coach in waiting title without any due diligence is strange.

That is the wrong answer.

Maybe you say yes, but you better think long and hard about it.

In two years, you could be in a situation where literally every coach in the world wants the job. You have Zion, Jrue, a ton of young talent (or AD) and you can get anyone. You happy to be locked into Finch in that scenario? Is he the absolute best candidate?

I fell like some of you have done what most people do - see only the upside right in front of you and not see the doors it closes. Think more, then decide.

How are you locked in?

You just change your mind.

Okay, then maybe you didn't understand the hypothetical.

If you make this promise and back out -- good luck getting any staff to come work for you in any department. It would be a massive black mark on the organization

The promise is that basically he gets a 3-5 year deal once Gentry leaves. And you can't go back. Sorry, I thought everyone knew what a coach in waiting was. I should have explained it fully for those who don't

Coaches are fired all of the time in the NBA. shite there have been many situations where a coach has been promised a job and then...nope. HCs are discarded like Kleenex in this league.

But your point is very well taken.

However, I’m of the opinion that Finch is a very good coach.

I do. Generally they aren’t given a contract in advance. Just a “promise”.

Promises are broken constantly. It’s business.

But your point is taken.

I tend to agree. It would be hard to see a good coach walk out the door when there is a way you could have kept him. But good organizations lose great people all the time. You don't limit your future options just out of fear of losing one.

You have easily tell him that “you will be heavily considered for the HC job.” If that doesn’t work than oh well. I can’t fault a man for making the best decision for his future.

Reasonable take.

I’m blinded by my absolute disdain of Gentry as a coach. And baffled he still has a job.

I’m desperate for any light at the end of the tunnel to him being gone. I acknowledge my bias.

Agreed. I like Finch and I think he'll probably be a good head coach. But things changed with Zion. We should be shooting for the stars in all aspects of the organization going forward.

No reason to handcuff yourself to a single guy. I like Finch, and I tell him he will get a fair opportunity when Gentry moves on like everyone else, and that’s the most I can promise.

On one side the continuity in the organization would be great because we have never experienced that. It would help show stability to the league.

However I'm not promising Finch anything. If he said he'd only stay if he's coach in waiting, I'd shake his hand and tell him good luck.

But I would try to sell him on the idea that he would be the first coach I'd interview to coach the most transcendent talent since LeBron. I'd tell him how much of an advantage he'd have because he'll know the vision of the franchise, he'll have a relationship with Zion, and he'll be intimately aware and involved in his game. In fact, I'd tell Finch he has basically a 2-year try-out for the job, be in a 'prove-it' position.

But I'm not giving any promises

Let him walk and bring on Igor. I’m not committing to a head coach in two years when we don’t have any clue how this team will be constructed and what other options we will have.

Finch is a nice coach, but I don’t believe he’s special enough to commit to him now.

Not something a strong minded decision maker like David Griffin would make. What exactly is the point, and if this was the plan why not execute it immediately?
