Can the Pels be serious contenders next year with this roster?

Assuming the coach is someone you are happy with and everyone is healthy. Do you think the Pelicans need to make a big move or can this team become a serious contender as is?

I know Davis, Moore, Mirotic, Hill, Holiday, Diallo, Miller, Jackson and Ajinca have contracts for next year with Cousins most likely being signed also. With Cousins being resigned, I assume the rest of the roster will be minimum contracts.

Are there any realistic moves this team could make to get better with Ajincas contract? Seems we are stuck with Hill and just need to hope he plays to his potential.

I don't know much about the details for salary caps with all the luxury tax, bird rights, MLEs, etc. I'm assuming the payroll will be one of the highest in the league.

If next season is a failure, do you blow it up?

I know I asked a bunch of questions, I'm just looking for signs of optimism next year and long term.

The team was starting to put it together right when Cousins got hurt. That was without Mirotic and Hill. I can only imagine they would be a more formidible team with more depth which was their biggest weakness.

Demps has done a good job at finding cheap rotational players. The team also has stars which may make it easier to bring in decent vets. There really is no reason to trade away first round picks going forward unless it is to acquire super cheap rotational talent they would be drafting anyways.

I think the future is bright. I am not sold on the coach as I am not sure he is maximizing the talent on a nightly basis.

Next season will not be a failure unless we are bitten hard by the injury issues again. The team should be able to make the playoffs with the talent still on the roster imo.

Honestly, I'm hoping some team like Washington or Portland decide to blow it up.

If you could somehow keep the trio and add one of:
Wall
Porter
Lillard

Than maybe you can contend.

So the team had one of the better offenses with poor depth. They add Mirotic and Hill for depth which should dramatically help with the defense.

Assuming Cousins returns to full strength the big roster question is figuring out how to use Rondo or the PG position. They don’t need some crazy star, but a solid defender who can give a little help facilitating the offense.

With a healthy roster the team isn’t in horrible shape. Ajinca seems to be a waste of space, but they should be abale to shed him easily next season. Hill should be able to focus on defense as he is surrounded by a ton of offensive talent.

The league is based off of star talent. I would say that Cousins, Davis, Holiday, and Mirotic put us up with the top of the league in elite talent.

He won't though. He may not ever be full strength again but he definitely won't be next season. He might be healthy enough to play but he won't be Boogie.

I think the odds are closer to blowing this thing up than being a contender at this point and it’s sad. Sure there is a lot of terrible luck involved but it’s also incompetency from management. You have people running this thing that only care a small part of the year. It’s really a shame but I could really sense that this team could be relocated in the next few years unless something drastic happens.

Having great all-star weekends here isn’t enough to warrant keeping a franchise.

you’re saying that we could “maybe” contend with Lillard, Jrue, davis, and Cousins???

Also, no way in hell we get wall or lillard if we resign Cousins.

While I disagree with some of the player decisions, Demps built a collection of some decent top end talent which is what you have to do in the NBA.

He put together Holiday, Gordon, Evans, Anderson, and Davis. If Davis is suppose to be some type of transcendent superstar that is some solid talent. It was mainly derailed by injury.

Then he has quickly turned that core into Holiday, Davis, Cousins, and Mirotic.

Now the coaching decisions have ended up bad and with all the injury issues it really makes you question the training staff imo.

They haven’t been cheap in spending money on the roster.

The roster with Hill returning should be able to make the playoffs imo and contend for the playoffs even without it.

I’m speaking more of these mandates that we continually hear about. Also, fighting past wrongs doesn’t make you right. Built a roster that better suits Monty than Gentry at first.

Demps is a smart guy, probably smarter than me, but he’s had his fair share of transgressions. The biggest issue is and will forever be ownership. Demps has had one arm tied behind his back. It’s been bad all around.

What has management held him back on? Demps has been allowed to spend all the money he wants. You don’t want to go into the tax until you will contend because your team will be blown up by the repeater penalty at some point.

I am not saying he hasn’t screwed up; however, an NBA coach has to be more talented then being tied down to one set of talent imo. You have to acquire stars to contend in the NBA. That is just reality. Demps has built a 2008 Laker-like roster. He needs to learn how to win with it or they need to find someone to take the reigns. Gentry was never going to out Warriors the Warriors.

Obviously it worked out in getting Niko, but things like not using the stretch provision on Asik and Ajinca before this year simply to avoid the tax. Not to mention the seeming lack of accountability or structure within the organization which has been widely documented. With Ferry around it has been better but I also feel like management has been somewhat gun shy to a level.

You keep hearing about how miserable guys were when they were here after they left. And how Gentry is now. Why? Management sets the culture and the culture is clearly a negative.

To me if you upgrade the coach and the staring PG position and get 80 to 90 percent of Cousins that will put you up there with anyone other then the warriors and maybe the rockets. I would like keep rondo if he agreed to run the second unit.

What if Cousins becomes a better all around “basketball player” because of this injury. Maybe he loses some athleticism but maybe he also begins to rely less on pure athleticism and as I said becomes a better all around player. Sure we will pay more than I’d like but it is what it is

Look at how few teams were willing to part with 1sts to get better going into the playoffs. Just us, the Pistons, and Cavs. Teams where the FO is on the hot seat. Nobody else thought it was worth spending a first to lose to the Warriors. There will be a lot of teams spending a lot of money on teams that are not good enough to justify the tax.

If the Pels can manage to stay afloat long enough that other teams bow out first, then you could see them trading Moore/Ajinca/Hill/1sts for good starters from other teams looking to blow it up.

The Pels could end up being one of those teams forced to blow it up too. If they're only fighting for the 8 seed again next year you might see trades dumping Mirotic and/or Moore and to avoid the tax and that pretty much signals the beginning of the end.

Let's work on being serious contenders for holding on to 30 point leads.

The Cousins situation could end up as a franchise killer. Worst injury at the worst time. Demps has no choice but to resign Boogie to a huge contract even though the odds say that his production will never be close to what it was before the injury.

I know medicine and treatment gets better every year but this injury is still devastating the majority of the time for athletes.

I do think Boogie's personality is the type that can overcome it though.
