Calipari Extends Contract w/UK

I'm not sure if this is PT newsworthy or not, but UK announced yesterday that Calipari has signed a two-year extension with the school that brings him to 2024.
I'm sure that doesn't mean he couldn't be had from a head coaching perspective, but I'd assume the buyout is fairly large for a coach of his "caliber".

You'd assume incorrectly. If this is just an extension of what he signed in 2014, that one had no buyout clause. LINK / If he wants to leave he just doesn't get paid the rest of the contract.

I thought he was making more money than that. If he wants to coach AD/DC it probably wouldn't be that much of an increase in expenses. At $8 million he'd make about $4 million more than Gentry. Unless the team is worse than expected again, they might make that up with increased ticket sales, not to mention playoff game money.

Do we want him for #basketballreasons? Probably not. But if next year goes sideways with Gentry and you need something to sell Cousins and AD on resigning/extending, bringing in Cal is something you do if it keeps them in town.

I was at work when I posted, so thank you Tiger for clearing that up.
Interesting that UK doesn't have a buyout to Calipari's contract. I guess they feel that confident that he's not going anywhere or that that they can get the next best thing because of their prestige.

Basketball Reference-Calipari NBA Coaching Record
We just hired a coach who was fired 3 times and has a less than 50% win percentage in his almost 8 fricking hundred games he's coached.

If it means we keep AD and Booige you're goddam right I'd want him here. He could also lure in some other good players.

Does he even have that kind of clout with his former players. I mean, he only coached them one year.
I'm not arguing that he doesn't, just asking what I think is a legitimate question.

You don't just hire Cal, you run it by AD/DC first and they'll tell you. Basically if next year isn't good enough you let them pick the next regime. However, they all still bleed blue and white and seem to have a ton of regard for Cal. He is a charmer that probably could spin a very convincing tale of how if they stayed together in NOLA with him they'd become legendary.

We are stuck with Dumb (Demps) and Dumber (Gentry).
