That kind of self deprecating humor is often one of the early steps in repairing a reputation. You admit to a wrong while minimizing the wrong you just admitted to with comedy.

Only thing that would've made it better is if Instead of an old lady trying to get in the elevator, it would've been John McEnroe yelling "Come on!!"
