Blake Griffin

It's a name i've seen thrown out a few times.
Question is, how would we theoretically acquire him? This wouldn't be directly with the AD trade correct? We wouldn't give up Jrue for Blake, so how else would we acquire him?

We could have acquired him without giving up AD or Jrue before, so yes, it is very possible.
The Pistons would take expiring, a solid vet, and one decent piece (solid pick or guy on rookie deal)
I have personally proposed resigning Randle and then flipping Randle, Hill, and a pick in February for him. Remember, this regime wasn't the one who traded for him

Given his issues and the length of his contract, a mix of Hill and some other pieces could do it.
The Pistons played him sparingly at points this year and he still couldn’t stay on the court for more than a portion of one playoff game.
They may want more than cap relief given what they gave up to get him but keeping him on their roster severely limits them for years.
To explain, Blake is owed between $34m and $39m across the next three seasons and needs to be packed in bubble wrap when not in use.
Dumping him is probably as good a deal as they can get.

I like Blake but just not the price tag. Then between him and Jrue that straps us for cash and if we trade for young pieces about to hit rfa and we have to let them go bc we dont want to dip into the luxury tax or we overpay and go into the luxury for a team thats not truly set to compete and are both unappealing realistic scenarios id be too scared of

Someone sell me on why we would want Blake to pair with AD and Jrue?
Factoring in injuries, fit next to AD, and salary.

I assume the idea that Nelson would be able to rejuvenate his ability to stay on the court and the idea that he could add ball handling capabilities from the point forward spot that this team needs would be major selling points.

pretty sure AD wouldn't be here in these hypo scenarios.

I think the Griffin theories were mostly centered around (1) AD being gone, and (2) the front office wanting a name that could sell some tickets while also maintaining the tank trajectory

Not just a name but also a respected veteran with good character and who could play at a high level as well.

Injury history is a big negative, but that and salary are also the only reasons why he would be available to the pelicans.
On the court, he is a perfect fit. He brings everything that Rondo did, and you never have to hide him on offense or defense. He is both a facilitator and finisher, and the pelicans have very few of either. He's a good defender and excellent rebounder.
The salary wouldn't bother me very much because he fills so many roles. He's as good of a scorer as Beal and as good a facilitator and rebounder as Draymond Green. His game has also evolved as his insane athleticism declined. That bodes well for his ability to continue to play at a high level throughout his contract.

idk I think blake and ad would work pretty great Blake would be your point forward think of when boogie was taking that job and when it worked it was good but Blake is 10xs the passer boogie is so it work even better

This. I'm a big Griffin fan. He'd help make AD so much tougher in every way, and if AD weren't around he'd shoulder the load

I don't know why everyone is saying "Blake and AD" there is no way we pay all 3 and it will get us anywhere, on top of the fact that AD is most likely gone. This is assuming we trade AD and Blake would become our new force down low. And we wouldn't be spending that much money considering Randle would cost us about 10mil and solomon hill cost us about 12mil. Throw in a third player and we would lose about 5-10 mil in cap for someone who can help us way more. I like the idea depending on other players we bring in and their contracts. I assume Griffin won't put us in any Asik or Solomon situation so I would fully trust this move.

Actually, if AD stays Blake would be the perfect player to pair him with (among realistic targets)

And tell again how we pay AD 46 mil, Jrue 24 mil, and Griffin 34 mil while still putting together other starters and a solid bench? That's 104 mil before we even throw a single other player in their. We arent the warriors and im not sold on another "do it big" experiment when most teams are focused on getting lengthy/ agile small forwards and perimeter shooters. I'm not saying it wouldn't be awesome but I don't think its very realistic with where we are at with AD, nor do I think it will really maximize our potential considering what type of return we could get trading AD. If we go after Griffin we have to use the rest of our money working on the perimeter and SF. It worries me spending that much money on bigs and I don't think its the best route personally.

This is borderline insane. Blake will never be able to outplay his contract. At the end of the day, this team just needs a goddamn wing who can shoot and is long. And then a group of second teamers who can run and fit Gentry's offense.

Like big C was saying, adding Griffin's specific rare skillset opens up so much for roster makeup. Elite-level point forward who now consistently makes 3's. Would allow us to start/finish with two other switchable wing defender types, rather than squeeze in a smaller "point guard" to maximize Jrue's value as a secondary/ shared-duty playmaker.

It seems like you are kind of describing AD and then saying we just need a better PG and solid SF. Which I agree with.

Fair enough take. Important to remember AD's supermax salary wouldnt kick in til' season after next (2020-2021...feels weird to type that).
Also, you would have to factor in the potential maximization of Blake's production with the team's top 1-5 training staffs in the league.
Not to mention the expected uptick in on-court value playing alongside two elite co-stars in AD/Jrue, the best supporting cast all three of have played with in their careers.
3&D Ariza/Tucker types are a lot easier to find and sign affordably (MLE, draft, etc.) than it is to acquire elite playmaking and shot-making.
