At what point does Griffin start taking some heat for roster construction?

It was painfully obvious this roster made absolutely no sense whatsoever this offseason. Very weak depth. A dearth of shooting and even worse when it comes to 3 point shooting. Just a weird team.

But it’s early in the process. It’s step 2 in a multi-year rebuild. But...

At what point does David Griffin need to start taking heat?

He has to have known that this roster was freaking weird and wouldn’t win too much, right? He has to have seen how poor the shooting would be right?

If after next year we don’t start to see a roster that is starting to make sense, Griff needs to be questioned, correct?

Honestly one of our main issues is Zion's lack of development and lack of fit. His inability to pass is mind-boggling.

At least he's hitting his FTs now appraently

This is definitely my biggest concern. He has one offensive move, is bad on defense, and can't pass at all. I understand that he's still less than 50 games into his career, but I'm legitimately concerned about his ability to become a perennial all-star caliber player.

Zion is 32 games into his career. Not too worried about that.

This team can’t make a 3 or defend one. Everyone is just fricking bombing 3s on us and we can’t make one. The book is out on us.

Only way to create some roster balance is by trading one or both of Bledsoe and Ball. Doubt he does that before the deadline.

I would say by trade deadline of ‘22
Don’t get mad at it right now. We all know it’s a working process this year.

I am concerned because we hired a guy who runs a style that clearly hides Zion's strengths and highlights his weaknesses.

Maybe in time that will change, but you'd think we'd want to bring someone in who would mesh with Zion's skillset.

This is way less important than Zion's development. Everyone knew the 8 seed was this team's ceiling this year. It's not about this year. It's way more important for Ingram and Zion to figure out how to play together on their way to becoming a top 5 duo in the league.

You’d think we’d want to bring in players that highlight his strengths too and we didn’t do that either.

The current roster is almost like someone trying to construct the worst possible team surrounding Zion.

He has not shown proper court vision or passing ability so i don't know if having more shooters really helps. that's the scary part

That’s stuff that can be developed. I’m not stressing over a guy 32 games into his career, but I have several minor concerns with Zion.

And to be clear with this thread, I’m not saying now is the time for Griffin to be taking heat.

It’s still early.

I’m simply asking... when is that time?

I've been asking this for the last week, because I honestly have no idea what the strength of this roster is or at the very least what Grif and Langdon were hoping the strength would be when they put it together.

We don't do anything well.

Our two 3-point shooters (Redick and Melli) are in severe slumps. BI and Lonzo have slumped as well.

i think a little early success has tainted expectations this year. if we don't flip that 1st and Hill for Adams people likely wouldn't expect the playoffs at all. getting Adams + some early wins made us expect a lot more from this team

Ok, cool... doesn't really answer my question on what this roster is supposed to be.

Also, considering we were right there for the 8th seed last year, it would be a huge step back if we don't at least compete for the postseason with (hopefully) Zion playing a full season.

Game 8 with this core. This is essentially preseason

The MO to me is figuring out the future of Hart, Ball, Bledsoe, JJ. There shouldn’t be panic bc all of those guys will have value if we want to trade them

Ingram and Adams are establishing their roles. Zion is making due with the congested offense

Hayes and NAW getting meaningful minutes

There’s a plan there. It’s way early considering the short turnaround and limited practice and preseason games

Probably trade deadline of next year. If we don’t have a roster that makes more sense by then, then there is a problem. Our issue is that neither of our 2 best players are guards, and we don’t have a competent half court primary ball handler. It’s a similar problem that the Clippers had last post season, it’s frustrating to play in crunch time when you don’t have a primary ball handler that can break down a defense, or organize your offense.

This. In the seasons when the goals start to shift from developing your young core to winning games and moving up the seeding ladder (and hopefully competing for titles at some point) is when the roster fit needs to be called out.

This team had holes and needs, but flexibility is still abundant. If this is the roster construction a couple years from now, I'll be concerned.

He's barely played 30 games and he's averaging 20/8. Let's cool it with the "lack of development" for a bit.

The roster will need to change for sure, let's see how it shapes up here over the next year.
