I really can’t think of one. Pelicans just strip mined the Lakers.

Lakers just gave gave themselves a 2-3 year window to win something.

I do not think AD is a generational player wherein you give up so much to get him.

So can you think of any trades where this has worked out for the team acquiring the center piece player?

Wiki - Cowboys/Vikings trade centered around Herschel Walker to MIN

PS - the Cowboys built their dynasty of the 90s off of this trade

ETA: oh you were looking at this from the Laker side and whether they have any chance for the future

yeah they just mortgaged like 10 seasons for 2

First one that came to mind was when the Heat traded for Shaq who was much closer to the end of his career they gave up Brian Grant, Lamar Odom, Caron Butler, and a 1st rd pick.

lol, you answered OP perfect.

I feel like you could argue the Rams have made a bunch of moves to win last season and got to the super bowl. They lost in the super bowl, and it was multiple moves not one single player like the lakers getting AD.

I hate to say it but I think this works for the lakers in the very short term. They will win 2019-2020 or 20-21. After that, who knows? The whole NBA is going to be weird in a post James era.

I really think LA screwed themselves

They dont have the cap space for another max guy, they wont have any way to build their team

They will be first round exits for the next 2 seasons, and then it's all downhill from there

They can actually, ya know, build a roster.

Let’s not act like $27 million in cap space is a problem. It’s only a problem if your front office is incompetent. Unfortunately for the Lakers, this applies to them.

You have to go way back in history to see when a trade this big worked out for the star. And in this case, let's hope history does not repeat itself- Lakers obtained Abdul-Jabbar from Bucks. The thing is, Jabbar like AD, wanted trade to LA or NY.
