2019 Re-Draft

I don't have a subscription to The Athletic, so I can't read this article by John Hollinger.
LINK
But NolaJake summarized it on the Locked On Pelicans podcast today.
If he had the 2019 draft to do over, he'd still take Zion #1, he would take NAW at #10, and he'd pass on drafting Jaxson Hayes in the first round.
Zion at #1 and passing on Hayes both seem rather obvious. I would imagine that all of us would agree that Zion has put any injury concerns to rest and Hayes has shown little to no improvement in his game since being drafted.
But I think a lot of people on this board would be surprised at NAW going at #10, since a lot of you seem to think that he was a bust at #17.
Would someone who has a subscription post what the article says NAW?

NAW has been far from a bust relative to his draft position, the biggest problem is everyone seen him dominate summer league and immediately thought he was this great player that slipped through the cracks and into our lap.
He's been a slightly (very slightly) above average defender, his offense has actually been his downfall

No one thinks he’s a bust where he got drafted. People just overvalued him after a few summer league games where he lit it up.
Either way we can all agree trading down was stupid.

I’m confused. He has NAW going #10 over Coby White, Darius Garland, and Rui? Can we trade NAW for any of those guys?

Here’s what he said about NAW and Hayes by the way:
quote:
10. Nickeil Alexander-Walker, New Orleans (actual pick: 17th): Well, that was quite a descent. You OK? No bruises? We’ve entered a different tier here, and one could defend any of the next five players as the 10th. After the nine more or less sure-thing rotation players at the top of the draft, we’re now in a more speculative area: Younger players who have either shown hints of rotation quality in low minutes or who have played a lot but not very effectively.
Alexander-Walker is probably the best combination of the two, as he has shown the ability to play on the ball and score but also has wing size and length that adds defensive versatility. You’d like to see him distribute more and calm down his itchy trigger finger, but he’s still relatively young (22), and his 2020-21 season has been decently productive.
quote:
Jaxson Hayes (eighth pick) has an amazing dunk reel and still has a halfway-decent case statistically, but the eye test on his defense is gross. He just has no idea how to play and doesn’t appear to be making much progress on that front. These question marks were there on draft day, but his tantalizing athleticism led to his being a lottery pick despite inconsistent production. Meanwhile, let’s just say the draft-day questions about his dedication to his craft haven’t gone away.

Why redraft and still make the same trade? We could stay there and take Tyler Herro.

Well NAW showed elite potential in that Clippers game. He did it all in that game. That is some huge upside.

I recently went back and watched the Clippers game. I think for NAW is as simple as his shot falling. The big thing for him right now is consistency with his shot and goes to make an impact on nights when his shot isn’t falling.

Give me Ja on a redraft.

Ja instead of Zion?

Morant is a nice player. Nice PGs are a dime a dozen. Just because we don't have one doesn't mean there aren't a lot.
There is NO one like Zion.
Morant will have a good career. Probably make a few All Star games. I doubt he's a HOFer though. Zion has HOF potential.

At 8?
There's nobody in their right mind that would take Ja over Zion

It’s funny, but I think over their respective careers, after seeing how Zion projects to be someone that is going to have the ball in his hands a lot and is so strong, I’m more concerned with Morant’s health long-term.
There is a lot of Rose in his game. He’s a smaller guy that can’t shoot and so he relies pretty heavily on driving and acrobatics and unlike Zion, he’s not someone that when he goes up, defenders move. Guys like that, that aren’t freakishly strong like Westbrook, but rely heavily on getting their points acrobatically, they tend to have a tougher time staying healthy long-term.

Both players are busts. Pels shouldn’t have traded and drafted someone good at basketball. Fire Griffin. Move the team.
