Some obvious choices are John Mayer and Jason Isbell.

Who else?

Off the top my head, I’ll go Adam Granduciel from the War on Drugs

And really by “most talented” I mean my current favorite. I have no idea who is most technically skilled.

Unpopular opinion:

I think younger people write better songs. When you're 50 you know everything passes or the pain eases or things will get better.

When you're 25 and your girl leaves you it's the end of the world and you feel all that pain so much more intently because it's one of your few, if not only experience. Younger writers just feel things more intently.

I'll take a younger song writer, if they're actually good, over an older one any day.

Jim James

He writes brilliant songs of all different genres, and he has a skill for making them all sound like his style. He reminds me of Prince in that way, even though their sounds are somewhat different.

Jack White is in the conversation as well. He is similar to JJ and Prince in those regards, but I think his penchant for weirdness keeps him from true greatness.

Ne-Yo is my answer. Great performer and songwriter.

In comparison, Chris Stapleton, he just hasn’t written as much as you would think.

Even Jack White hasn’t written as much.

Does it?

I feel like the events leading to Tears in Heaven would have been equally emotional at any age.

BJ’s older stuff is great, but I haven’t been a huge fan of AA’s newer stuff. Great shout though.
