Caught the beginning on TV and figured I'd watch a little. Ended up watching the whole thing for the hundredth time. Best Star Trek movie and ages very well.

Prime Kirsty Alley before she became gravitationally challenged!

Great movie.
A couple of thoughts and questions that I posted in another thread.
Saavik is correct. The Kobiyashi Maru is complete BS. Kirk describes it as a "test of character" but what exactly is being tested besides the initial decision to enter the Neutral Zone? Within five seconds of entering, you have three Klingon cruisers up your arse and they knock down your shields, disable the power and kill the bridge crew with two shots.
Also, the Ceti Alpha V incident pretty much torpedoed Chekov's career, right? At the beginning of the movie, he was first officer on a top of the line ship with full need to know about Starfleet's most secret operation and after that he never sniffed a position of real influence ever again.
Sulu goes on to command the Federation's most advanced ship until, I guess, the Enterpise-B comes along and Chekov is more or less relegated to comic relief.

The movie was a spinoff of an episode of the original series of course .... Space Seed (S1 Ep22) being one of the better episodes of the original series which is why it was chosen for the ST2 spinoff major motion picture and, when it came out,was a bigger success than the first movie.
Madelyn Rhue had done an episode of Fantasy Island playing Liley Langtree with Ricardo Montelban a year or two before WofK was in development I believe, but by the time the movie was made so they had to write around her character because she had other commitments, she was a regular or had just signed a contract for the TV series Fame (she played a former member of the Enterprise crew who decided to leave with Kahn after his attempted takeover was thwarted.).
Rhue was a stone cold smoke show in her day.
Anyways, with Rhue written out and the catalyst of Kahn's rage, the movie worked out really well and was a big hit.
Can't remember but wasn't that when we first met Kirk's son?

Great movie, when I was a kid those bugs that crawled in your ear caused nightmares with every watch.

I think her health played as big a part as these other obligations. She was diagnosed with MS in 1977 and they just didn't have the treatment options back then to slow the disease progress.

Did she ever say she thought the test was garbage?
ETA She did indicate she didn't think it was a fair test, but she was still thinking in terms of win/lose.
And the character test is how you deal with losing the ship in danger because of inaction or losing your crew because of action. As a leader, you are going to eventually have to deal with death because of your decisions. I think that was always the point of the test. Kirk shortcutted that because he never thought it was important. He realized the value of it at the end.

Also, I agree this is one of the best Star Trek movies, if not THE best, but I'd like to submit Undiscovered Country as 1b at least.
Also, Generations and First Contact from the TNG series are great flicks.

I agree. Wrath is amazing, but Undiscovered Country is so overlooked. It's a great film that analogizes the Cold War era. Plus great action.

First Contact, yes. You lost me on Generations. I hate the film. Two things I hate the most were the destruction of the Enterprise D and the death of Kirk.

GENS is pretty "meh", IMHO, but I agree that TWOK are TUC are probably the best TOS films, and FC is the cream of the TNG films.
I would have them:
TWOK
FC
TUC
TVH
TSFS
TMP
(These below are really a "the field" type situation - none particularly better than the others in the grand scheme of things)
GENS
TFF
INS
NEM
(I'm famous for this, most of y'all don't agree, don't care)
2009
(Didn't watch any of the rest of that shite)

Love Wrath of Khan. Love it. It is the perfect space adventure movie. For years I've said that there is no way this movie gets made today. Kirk and Khan are never in the same room together. You don't really notice it, but they never have the final battle that today's movies just have to have.
Star Trek Into Darkness proved me correct. The movie ends with Spock and that sorry excuse for Khan fighting on top of a speeding garbage truck. There was no artistry to it; no heart nor feeling. It was just Spock beating the frick out of Khan. His superior intelligence wasn't outwitted by Kirk, who deftly played Khan's vanity in the original film.
Anyway, I can rant about Khan for hours.
Shatner is doing a Wrath of Khan tour, if yall are interested.

Looks like the closest the tour is coming to Louisiana is Houston. Unless they add more dates.

To me First Contact was damned near perfect. The "Moby Dick" concept was a great script with Picard dealing with the post traumatic stress of being taken and violated by the Borg and how he had to deal with the Borg in the same manner Ahab was dealing with the white whale and Alfre Woodard's character was a perfect companion to keep Picard from destroying himself...
I could go on for a bit but this is about WOK and it's my second favorite...It's another Moby Dick story where Khan, like Ahab, was so obsessed in his revenge it destroyed him.

Agreed. It is probably the best Star Trek film. And the Picard/Lily exchange in the ready room is a great scene.

I thought it was perfect fan service and an offical passing of the torch from Kirk to Picard. Malcom McDowell excels in everything he does and the scenes at the end with the 2 captains are great IMO. Getting a tiny tidbit of backstory to Kirk was a nice touch. And I always loved this exchange between the two:
Kirk: Captain of the Enterprise, huh?
Picard: That's right.
Kirk: Close to retirement?
Picard: I'm not planning on it.
Kirk: Well let me tell you something. Don't! Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do *anything* that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.
