Would Walt have been content with working for Gus very long?

Let's assume this event never happened.

Would Walt have continued to cook under Gus, or would his ego have gotten to him sooner or later, regardless of the money he was making?

Walt was clearly ambitious, and heroic when pushed. However, he was craven by nature and required some sort of "juice" to be dangerous - the cancer to break bad. A threat to himself, his family (and, ultimately, Jesse) to act out on his inner Heisenberg instincts.

So, without the relationship with Gus going South, Walt would likely have amassed a 9 figure fortune (assuming the cancer never recurred) and retired. The more money Walt made, the safer Gus would have felt because Walt had a lot to lose by cooperating with the authorities.

I always thought Gus' plan was to get Walt's recipe then either have him killed or turn him over to Tuco's family, to be tortured/killed. He has no way of knowing that the twins would be killed or many of the other circumstances would happen. He never intended to have Walt working for him a long time.

Short answer is no. Too big of an ego.

Gus' plan was for Gale to replace Walt in the near future. Whether Walt died naturally or not was the only question for Gus.

Walt wasn't content with a goddamn thing in his life. That's why he couldn't help fricking up everything he touched. If he just cooked and quit being so paranoid he would've left his family a fortune.

Walt was a pussy and in real life would've been shot in the face midway through S1.

I disagree. Gus had his operation running like clockwork and he wanted to keep the employees he could trust. If Walt didn't cause trouble (insisting Jesse was his partner, killing those dealers), Gus would've been happy keeping him as long as possible. Walt was only getting 3% of the take, so it was a good deal from Gus' end.

Also, Gus did plan for the twins to be killed, or at least have the Feds after them (and more importantly, the Cartel) for ambushing a DEA agent. That's why he turned the twins away from Walt and onto Hank, then called Hank a minute before the attack.

Seems to me like all indications of the writing point to no. Walt’s ego and narcissism would have led to problems before too long.

I don't think he would have ever retired. Also, Gus would have killed him once he got that recipe down. Gus wasn't the type to keep many friends (besides that one guy who got killed by the cartel). That guy though could possibly be his romantic partner. He and Vince Gilligan have never answered yes or no to that question about his sexuality though.

It was so strongly implied that I can't believe anything else.
