The moral of the story: If you make it difficult for your potential customers to legally acquire your products, then they will find other, often easier, ways to obtain them.

I torrent movies that are really hard to find in blockbuster, best buy, and on amazon. I delete it afterwards though.

If I don't delete it and move it to a permanent folder, I plan on buying it. I have never not bought a movie/tv show I planned on buying either.

That cartoon is right.

Most of us don't want 120 channels of crap.

We want to pick and choose our TV and we'll pay a fair price for our selections.

So as long as everything is going to be bundled together - the crap with the good - people are going to look elsewhere.

So when the ps4 comes out and its hard to find, i should be able to steal the display one at best buy?

I mean ...I want it now so who says they should stop me?

I don't like to be told no or to have be patient.

The harder it is to obtain, the more likely people will find other ways to obtain it.

Wiki didn't say pirating is good or noble. The cartoon explains why pirating is so rampant.

Pirating is rampant for 2 reasons:

1) The entertainment industry promoted the pirating software, and taught us how to use it,

2) The entertainment industry made their product unnecessarily difficult to obtain.

When you make it unreasonably difficult to obtain, the most basic principle of physics kicks in, objects follow the path of least resistance.

Is it right? no. Is it illegal? yeas.

But Hollywood has nobody to blame but themselves.

Someone doesn't understand piracy. If you stole the display at best buy there would no longer be a display at best buy. That is theft. If you download Game of Thrones you are not taking anyone else's Game of Thrones. You are copying one that already exists because someone else wants you to enjoy the gift of Game of Thrones.

Downloading the plans to make your own PS4 is a closer analogy.

that's a debate to be had, and one that has been had on the poli board recently ( link - with a published expert in the field commenting in the thread regularly ), however, that's not the point of this thread.

the issue I want to point out is the media companies (and seemingly your) inability to recognize and accept realities in the marketplace.

in the case of the media companies, they want to maintain their pricing structure and control over the product as they had in the past in today's market environment, and that just plain and simple does not work.

the world has changed. it's time for them to change too, or else they will continue to fight a losing battle.

Agree. Path of least resistance generally applies. If you make it too hard for people to do the right thing, they rarely will.

If I wanted to watch game of thrones and it wasnt available thru conventional methods....the path of least resistance would be to watch something else.

Or go outside.

Then you are apparently the exception not the rule.

Torrenting is simple quick and easy and people are rarely caught and punished for it. Of course people are going to do it.

The question everyone is asking though is WHY game of thrones isn't available through conventional methods? They want to cut down on piracy there is their first step in the right direction.

They can't expect to sit on their asses and use the same model they have always used, the game has changed.
