Why didn't they change Luke's last name?

It's not like Skywalker is as common as Smith. Were the Jedi (Obi Wan & Yoda) that stupid?

How do you know that?

There’s a ranch called Skywalker Ranch. It’s a pretty common name.

Context clues based on Yoda saying there is another Skywalker.

Did the name skywalker ever get luke in trouble? What exactly would have changed had they given him a different surname

Because Lucas didn't make the decision to make Vader Luke's father until production of Empire. I mean, Vader did mention "the Force is strong with this one", but otherwise had no inkling of identification during the Battle of Yavin.
Of course, he never detected that Leia was was his daughter until he read Luke's mind. So, I must assume that Lucas didn't make that final decision until near the end of the Empire.
Clearly plotholes and some retconning, but they're (meaning non-specialized Star Wars, Empire and Return of the Jedi) still better than any so-called "Star Wars" film since, by several orders of magnitude.

So Yoda knew Mary Poppins in space was going to happen, but did nothing to stop it?

Being that once Vader knew Luke's last name it made it obvious that they were related.

Jedi wasn't that great. The ewoks brought it down some from Star Wars and Empire.

All true. And yet the clippings of film from the edits of Jedi that fell on the floor of the editing room constitute a better film than the prequels and the sequels. Without question.

I liked the concept of the prequels, but the dialogue and execution were horrible. TFA was a lazy attempt and TLJ is just a garbage movie. I liked RO and thought Solo was okay.

1) Tatooine wasn't the Empire
2) I doubt they have a census on every sentient being in the galaxy

Let's hide Vader's kids, but let one of them keep his uncommon last name. Makes perfect sense.

Vader thought that Padme died before she could give birth. He didn’t know about a son until the Emperor senses Luke in ESB, and Vader doesn’t know about a daughter until RotJ when he senses Luke’s thoughts.

You are falling prey to the same mindset that plagues both the prequels and sequels, namely, “Despite the Republic spanning thousands upon thousands of planets across most of the known galaxy, there are only about fifteen people in it.”

Or you can realize it's just a movie and the concept that he was Vader's son was only invented years later as a retcon. Jesus Christ...

Well, it's always been clear that the overall big story didn't exist until Empire Strikes Back. Star Wars was a standalone that made so much money they got to make more, and that's when things started getting written.
Looking back at it, they certainly could have done a better job- not only does Luke keep his true name, he lives on Vader's home planet, at the one place Vader knows he has family (the Lars homestead, where his mother lived). Talk about hiding in plain sight.
Vader can sense and connect to Luke while one is in orbit, but can't pick up on Leia being his daughter (or sense her Force presence), as he fricking tortures her on the Death Star. And for continuity (or lack thereof), this is exactly how Kylo Ren senses Rey. You'd think a polished Jedi/Sith would do as well as a semi-trained emo Force user.
And let's not forget the suddenly creepy brother-sister flirtation going on; were they Skywalkers or Lannisters? Can't tell me Lucas had that thought out in advance.
Trying to remember if Vader ever saw Artoo, I don't think he did. But he did see Threepio, which it later came to be that he fricking made him. Not even the slightest hint of curiousity there, though... again, Vader seems to miss a lot.
And of course the sequels make things worse. Someone tell me why, after Solo, Lando does anything to help out Han? I mean, sure they survived the Solo story, but Han seems to rip him off pretty badly. I'd figure there'd be a grudging frick You coming from him, not a Hey let's go change my life and join the Rebellion and save Han from Jabba moment. If anything, Lando should say Han got what he deserved, and now I get my ship back.

I mean, Rogue One was pretty damn good.

I certainly hope you don’t have any chemistry related accidents in the near future.
FYI, played a poker tournament for the first time in over a year last night. We chopped at the final 3.
